Editorial Reviews

Review

“In this book, we are invited to explore one of the great spiritual movements born in the twentieth century: Reiki. Don Beckett, unlike many writers on the subject, comes not with blind affirmations regarding the life of Reiki's founder, Mikao Usui. Instead, gathering the latest discoveries made about Usui, Beckett attempts to paint the most accurate portrait possible of a man whose life has been, until now, cloaked in legend. We now see Mikao Usui more fully, as a seeker of truth, concerned about human beings and the true meaning of a human life. Beckett describes in detail and with clarity many of the Japanese healing techniques associated with Reiki, as well as those used by the practitioner to increase his or her connection to the universal Source. Also discussed are the archetypal Reiki symbols, their inner meanings and uses, and the energetic empowerment procedure called Reiju, which is largely unknown in Reiki today. Also incorporating selected knowledge from other disciplines, Beckett reveals not just a deeper understanding of Reiki, but a holistic understanding of the energetic nature of life. This book is not only the exploration of a teaching, but the exploration of our true nature and the means leading to its discovery.”
—Karma Tsering, teacher of Reiki, Paris and Amsterdam

“In what is destined to become a classic work about Reiki, Beckett-sensei takes us on a step-by-step journey toward spiritual healing, which then manifests as tangible healing in all aspects of our lives. Having begun our own healing, our influence on the world around us—like ripples from a pebble dropped into a still pond—benefits everyone and everything. And we learn to focus our healing energy as needed. This wonderful book is your opportunity to be healed and to help heal the world.”
—Gyo Bo In Nichijo Fumon, Abbot, Fumon Shugyo-An (Hokke-Mon Shu Buddhist Tradition)

“Whether your previous experience with Reiki has been through a class or weekend workshop, or you’ve spent years in study with a Japanese-trained sensei or you are just curious about Reiki, this book provides a comprehensive account of the practice and its origins.”

Just when you think that there is no need for yet another Reiki book.

I must first comment on the quality of the publication itself. The book is printed on high quality heavy weight semi-lustre paper. It is trade paper book size with a very nice sturdy cover.

Well, Reiki: The True Story is not just another Reiki book it will soon become THE Reiki book.

What makes Don Beckett's book so unique?

The book not only explores the early known more factual based history of Mikao Usui (that could be culled from some of Usui-sensei's last living students and their students) it is also broken up into the three main levels of traditional Reiki (Japanese Reiki); Shoden, Okuden and Shinpiden.

He presents traditional Usui Reiki in as close to its original context as possible.

Beckett shares his knowledge, his thoughts and his intuitive approach in a very comfortable, first person voice that has a nice touch of humble authority on the subject.

I choose the word humble to describe his approach as he has much experience on the topic but also enough wisdom to not come off as a know it all expert with the final word.

He is always inviting the reader to think and intuit for herself, something I greatly appreciate.

Beckett's book will cause your Reiki vibes to stir right up and flow. He speaks with compassion.

It is difficult for me to write as elegant and eloquent as the author to how awesome this book is....but it really is.

This book,Reiki: The True Story: An Exploration of Usui Reiki will definitely be the text I will use in my own classes.

It is not often that I write any sort of a book review, and it is not often that I come across a Reiki book that I want to say complimentary things about, since most Reiki books in print are fairly dreary and lacking in content, I find.

But "Reiki, the true story" by Don Beckett does not fall into this category and is one of the few Reiki books that I can wholeheartedly recommend. This is a hefty book, running to over 200 pages, and is very pleasing to the eye. But what is important is its content, and there is much to commend.

Don has brought together from various Japanese sources a detailed and fascinating description of the story of Reiki: its origins and its practices at different times during Usui Sensei's life, and its journey to the West. It is easy to read, comprehensive, and brings out the similarities and agreements between the different sources of information, as well as the contradictions and the mysteries, things that confront anyone trying to get to grips with what Usui's original system was all about.

This is more than a history book, though. Don examines in detail the original practices of Usui Sensei's system, as described by the different sources, showing what was practised at the different training levels, and offers personal insights and suggestions for experimentation and further practice.

I found that I could not put this book down, and I believe that this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who wants to discover what Reiki was all about, as a reference work and as a practical workbook.

Don's book is an important contribution to the Reiki community. Elaborating on what has become a somewhat controversial subject; the history of Mikao Usui and his Reiki system, including the two Buddhist Nuns who allegedly spent most days with Usui san during his last four years of life, this book covers new ground in that area.

What I like most about this book, however, is Don's revelation that Usui's system, as it was originally created, was for the individual to discover and experience SELF as they traveled this path. The system was and is a life long journey to understanding and loving the self. As a wise man once said, 'know thyself'.

I am on my second reading as there is much to digest here. Don encourages us to dive deep into the realm of Reiki self practice, to find our own way by going beyond dogma (and even technique) and allowing ourselves to learn from Rei ki itself.

A very good read for anyone who loves Reiki and for those who have a budding interest as well. Thanks Don!

This book must be taken in the spirit it is written, which is to expand upon Reiki's path into the west. There are arguments around the rewriting of the history of Reiki to include aspects thought not to have been originally taught by Mikao Usui, such as the kotodama, variations on transmitting attunements, and the insight into Usui's experience that led to the formalization of Reiki as a system. I completely respect those arguments and feel a sense of protection for the traditional study and the culture that created it. With that in mind, understand that this book challenges facets of that tradition. If you are not comfortable with that, this book is not for you.

That said, I find it engaging and well-written. I cannot speak to the validity of Reiki's history; therefore, I cannot judge the accuracy of this work. It is compelling and carries with it a sense of honor and respect for the Usui tradition, despite its deviations. This book could appeal to someone beginning Reiki, but it is more likely to address questions and curiosities of a seasoned practitioner, as well as pique established methodologies.

More About the Author

Don Beckett was raised on a ranch in Colorado, back in the days when there were still one-room country schoolhouses. He attended one of those for 2 years, until it was closed; then had to go 10 miles to school in town. : ^ (

Beckett grew up thinking he would be a graphic artist or a writer. As a child, he was always reading books, especially fiction - and sometimes made his own comic books, on butcher paper. He loved to draw and paint, and he dreamed for a while of working for Walt Disney as an animator (in the days when Walt Disney was still alive, and when animation was still drawn by hand, cell by cell : ^ ). But he got diverted into "Science" instead.

He was blessed to be dis-illusioned of that idea while still in college (Arizona State University), then spent 16 years practicing writing. Then he got tired of words, and Reiki found him (living in Portland, Oregon). Eight years later, in Arizona, he began initiating others into Reiki ... and a sequence of great serendipities began to unfold.

He made a series of trips to Mexico, living there for months at a time, returning to the refuge of his mother's home in Arizona. He lived and worked at a hot springs in Utah. Reiki took him to Singapore and Bali for half a year. He lived in Hawai'i for 5 years - and it was there that writing came back into his life. Reiki and writing came together in the creation of a website - "Reiki, Johrei, Macrobiotics" (now called "Reiki, Shinki, Macrobiotics") - which soon attracted students from around the world. Beckett was plunged into the abyss of cyberspace....

More and more, he began to see that Reiki (and everything else!) was just a path to Self-realization. And the serendipities continued ... including the 2009 publication of "Reiki, The True Story: An Exploration of Usui Reiki" (by Frog Books, a division of North Atlantic Books).

Today, Don is internationally respected as a teacher of Reiki and Jourei ... and "Reiki, The True Story" is used by many as a Reiki teaching manual.

Don has been practicing Reiki since 1991, teaching and initiating others since 1999. In 2000 he became a member of Johrei Fellowship. In 2006 he was authorized to teach Quan Yin Joray. In 2010 he began teaching his own system of Jourei. Many of Don's students are in faraway places. They find him through his website Reiki, Shinki, Macrobiotics, and correspond by email. He also has taught many students in person -- in the U.S., Bali, Romania, Turkey, Italy, and Serbia.

Don's latest project is working with the spiritual energy of Shinki ("God-energy" or "Source-energy"), through a method he co-founded with Dragan Pavlovic of Serbia.
