Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The members of Kinky and their instruments were apparently caked in sludge during the recording of Reina, when a Southern California landslide barreled through their recording studio. Fortunately for us, the resulting album is anything but muddy. The third release from the Monterrey Mexico quintet, Reina is packed full of Kinky's eclectic sound; electronic samples, funk, jazz, hip hop, a killer bass line, accordion, guitar riffs, and Latin beats blended until blissful. Songs on Reina alternate between uptempo dance numbers to more ethereal chill-out tunes ("Sister Twisted" and "And Again and So On" are among the stand-out dance tracks). While not as mind-blowing as their eponymous first release, with Reina the group continues to refine their sound and defies listeners to keep their toes from tapping. --Renata Sadunas

Product Description

On their third album Reina, Kinky turn chaos into a grand celebration as they conquer mudslides, floods and collapsing houses to produce their most exciting album yet. Album opener "Sister Twisted" invites you on to the dance floor with its playful and bouncy beat, and the high-speed song "Again And So On" speaks of looking for the differences in each day so life doesn't get monotonous. The kick-back track "Monday Killer" suggests staying in bed all day with your lover and wasting the day away, while the beat-driven "A Donde Van Los Muertos," the most romantic track on the album, speaks of death but as an expression of love. Having completed their recording sessions, Kinky -- lead vocalist Gilberto Cerezo, keyboardist Ulises Lozano, guitarist Carlos Chairez, bassist Cesar Pliego and drummer Omar Gongora -- are anxious to kick it into gear and hit the road this fall. The band is eager to set a whole new array of dance floors afire. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm Really Trying to Like This...Really I Am..., December 20, 2007

This review is from: Reina (Audio CD)
Sometimes what they say is true and a band's first album is really their best work. While Kinky's self-titled first release was a non-stop sexy Latin techno dance party from beginning to end, this album is just full of sounds I'm already tired of. I really don't need to hear the Talking Heads all over again or Technotronic for that matter. I've had this CD in rotation in my car for months and short of really liking the opening track, Sister Twisted, and the haunting Adonde Van Los Muertos (Where Do The Dead Go), the rest is almost work to listen through. This CD is taking a long time to grow on me.

5.0 out of 5 stars KinkyKINKYkInKY!!!!!, September 5, 2006
This review is from: Reina (Audio CD)
I bought this album about three weeks ago at a concert and instantly felt the energy. This is unlike Kinky and Atlas, but it is a good album. You should definately give it a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little techno, a little...B52s?!, September 6, 2006
This review is from: Reina (Audio CD)
While their debut, "Kinky" was all about the danceable techno and their sophmore disc (my favorite, "Atlas") triumphed in infectious, highly melodic pop (lots of it in English) their third spin takes them in both those directions, and then some. After a few tight electrojams and some balladic musings, it's a free-for-all of chronologic and ethnic influences, from 80's quirk bands, The B52s and Men at Work (whose lead singer Colin Hay guests on "Monday Killer" to goose-pimpling effect!), to 90's hard-core femme rapper Nefertiti who engages in a call-and-response-rap with the lead singer on "Lay Back." "Queen (Reina)" is another marvel from the Mexican Talking Heads!
