This review is from: Reincarnation of a Lovebird (Candid 1960) (Audio CD)
There are two Mingus albums of this name. A 1960 version with a largish ensemble including Eric Dolphy originally recorded on Candid, and a 1970 sextet date originally recorded on the French America label and released in the U.S. on Prestige. Amazon's listing shows the Candid cover but lists the tunes that are on the French recording. The tunes on the Candid date are:
Reincarnation of a Lovebird; Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams; R & R; Body and Soul; and Bugs.

This review is from: Reincarnation of a Lovebird (Candid 1960) (Audio CD)
At his core, Mingus was a blues man, but these tunes aren't the pentatonic chord progressions of Magic Sam and Buddy Guy (but I enjoy them too). This isn't neighborhood blues, but the huge blues of big cities linked together by Ellington and the great touring bands. And Charlie Parker (at least in spirit) puts in an appearance now and then.
Mingus straddled two eras: He played bass with Bird, but he also lived well into the hard bop era that saw new talents like Lee Morgan emerge--and managed to stay as relevant as ever. It's hard to go wrong with any of his recordings. The sound quality of this one is superb. Some recordings of this vintage sound terrible, and some quite good. It's mostly in how the tapes were stored. Like Monk, Mingus has stood the test of time. You could start with this recording, and it would be a good start.

Mingus without Mingus,
By Marvin Wanetick (michigna) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reincarnation of a Love Bird (Audio CD)
This is a recording made after Mingus was already sick and unable to play his instrument. I once borrowed the vinyl copy from a library and copied it on a cassette. As I remember the liner notes, Mingus was present at the recording sessions, but was only able to offer the most minimal of directions or advice. Still this is presented as his recording.Nevertheless, the music is terrific. It features an extended big band made up of a large number of Mingus alumni, and the music alternates between solo excursions for almost everyone, and ensemble free blowing interludes. It's terrific music.
