Book Description

October 1, 2009
The first of its kind to explore the Nobel Prize experience!

"Dad, some guy is calling from Sweden." It was 2:30am on October 13th, 1998, the youngest son in the Laughlin house had answered the phone. His dad had just become a recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics.

Frantic and funny events of the next two months are chronicled as the Laughlin's academic household morphs into a madcap staging area for the family and thirty guests who will be in attendance during Nobel week. From tickets to Stockholm to clothing measurements, Nobel lecture preparations, attaché assistance and a quick trip to the White House for a formal reception with President and Mrs. Clinton, readers will laugh out loud while gasping in awe.

The glorious Nobel ceremony and elaborate banquet is held each winter with a viewing audience of tens of millions. An intimate dinner with King Gustaf in his royal palace follows the Nobel evening in which Anita Laughlin finds herself the King's dinner partner for what becomes an evening of hilarious surprises, and yes, reindeer.

This book is laced with cartoons drawn by Bob Laughlin that evoke collective feelings of surprise and bewilderment as he and his wife ascend the steep learning curve of Swedish protocol together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Story!, September 26, 2009
This review is from: Reindeer with King Gustaf: What to Expect When Your Spouse Wins the Nobel Prize (Hardcover)
Every little girl dreams about being introduced to a real life King and this book magically takes the reader on this true life journey to do just that! Reindeer with King Gustaf is a remarkable story that not only explores the magestic events surrounding the Nobel Prize ceromony, but also leaves the reader feeling a true love story. The descriptions of the events, the menus, the gowns, and all the glamour are written in such a wonderful way, it makes the reader feel as if they were there in Stockholm too. It was a delightful book to read and I would highly recommend it!

I read Reindeer with King Gustaf in one day in the heat of "indian summer" while Anita Laughlin's wonderful descriptions carried me far away to snowy Stockholm!
Ms. Lauglin explains her husband's work in a way that even the "scientifically challenged" will understand and appreciate. I enjoyed her humor and was awed by the descriptions of the splendor of the regal ceremonies of the highest honor, the Nobel Prize. Reindeer with King Gustaf is definitely a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, unique, and exhilarating!, October 26, 2009
This review is from: Reindeer with King Gustaf: What to Expect When Your Spouse Wins the Nobel Prize (Hardcover)
I just finished reading Anita Laughlin's fabulous, magical book, Reindeer with King Gustaf; I say "magical" because I feel as if I have just returned transformed and inspired from an exhilarating week at the Nobel Prize Ceremony and celebration receptions; "fabulous" because she imparts so much wonderful information on so many life-affirming topics along the way as she tells this delightful story. I can't remember the last time I read a book in two sittings - if I hadn't begun the first sitting so late at night, I would have read it in one enthralled sitting. There is so much to praise about this book, I hardly know where to begin. Once the word gets out about it, I think EVERYONE is going to want to read it! I will re-read this wonderful book when I want to ponder the grand joys of life or treat myself to some sure laughter. My appreciation and admiration go out to Anita and Robert Laughlin for the accomplishments, humanity, and humor so obviously present in their lives that made the writing of such a unique book possible!
