Although all the works on this CD are exquisitely performed and recorded, the "forgotten" cello concerto of Carl Heinrich Reinecke is the showpiece of this album. Samis' performance is lyrical and expressive, with a mature technique that masterfully and seemingly effortlessly addresses the work's many virtuosic passages. The Gateway Chamber Orchestra also shines here, with a solid rendition under the sensitive baton of Music Director Gregory Wolynec. This likely represents the first professional recording of the 1864 work, and no composer - dead or alive - could hope for a finer one. Also included are solo cello works by Sir John Tavener and Ernest Bloch and a piece for cello and orchestra by Robert Schumann. Eric Willie also joins Samis in a haunting work for cello and marimba by Osvaldo Golijov.

I had never heard of Carl Reinecke, or of his forgotten cello concerto until about a year ago when a friend of mine sent me a short demo recording of Michael Samis performing a bit of it while creating this album. What a gorgeous and haunting piece of music! My first thought was, "Dang, how could this piece of music be forgotten?", and my second thought was, "I can't thank Michael Samis enough for recording it!"

And now, a short year later, I'm able to listen to the whole concerto along with some Schumann, Bloch, Golijov & Tavener, and I just couldn't be happier. Every time I listen to the album (which has been a daily occurrence now for over a week) I'm moved again and again not only by the pieces themselves, but by the emotional impact that I feel from Michael's playing. Damn. The man can play a cello, no question, and the Gateway Chamber Orchestra accompanies him perfectly throughout. I won't be forgetting this album anytime soon, and neither will you.

The music is stunning and impeccably performed. What a treasure to discover the "lost" Reinecke Cello Concerto. Golijov's Mariel is haunting - one of my favorite works - and this version is outstanding.
