This remaster is excellent. Avoid the bad sounding 2011 version.

Sony/BMG Living Stereo got it right when they remastered this in 1999 using vintage tube equipment for the the transfer and engineers with high level of talent. If you want an excellent Reiner Conducts Wagner this CD is the only one to get. If by some odd chance you actually want a very, very bad sounding version get the 2011 Sony.

Sadly the people and equipment used for this great 1999 remasters were thrown out like old garbage in 2008 by evil Sony management. They now employ the same low rent engineers who ruin everything they touch. Good Amazon visitors, please avoid any Sony Classical [even if it shows the living stereo banner) after 2008 and instead go for the Sony/BMG Living Stereo CD and SACD Hybrid releases from 1993-2007

P.S. All above refers to the Wagner portion of the CD. The Don Juan recording has some technical errors and probably will never again be on CD. There is an excellent sounding but different Reiner Don Juan performance on a 2006 Sony/BMG Living Stereo SACD.

These performances from forty years ago have never been surpassed for clarity and excitement. RCA's early stereo sound in pre-renovation orchestra hall still sounds impressive. Very highly recommended.

In addition to being a Richard Strauss specialist, Reiner was noted as a conductor of Wagner. His experience with Wagner's works from the 1930's in various opera houses around the world and at the Metropolitan Opera from 1949-53 is evident here. Reiner's command and control in these excerpts makes them sound completely different from other conductors' performances. I only wish that there had been an additional Reiner/Chicago Wagner album or two, as had been done by George Szell in Cleveland. The sound is not the best by the Mohr/Layton team; it seems as if there was tape overloading in the fortissimo passages.
This CD is filled out with Reiner's 1960 Chicago recording of Richard Strauss' "Don Juan." Recommended for the unique Wagner performances, not the sound.

while i am a fan of getting the entire Der Ring, because that is the only way to truly experience Wagner's stellar music, this is an excellent recording, especially of Dawn and Siegfried's Rhine Journey. for the Funeral March, i recommend the actual Der Ring with Solti conducting. that has more passion and takes its time for a stronger build up than Reiner does here. Still this is an excellent collection.
