A LOYAL FAN FOR MANY YEARS,
By DaVonna Harris (Des Moines, Iowa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rejoice (Audio CD)
I remeber it like it was yesterday. Listening to the emotions was a daily ritual. I was yelled at by mother several times a day to "turn it down!" I knew all the words to every song and even dreamed of becoming a singer like the emotions. I heard the emotions were going to be in Omaha Nebraska where I lived and I literally lost it. I begged for tickets after all the day of the concert was my birthday(September 23rd). My mother said I was too young to go to a concert and she could not afford it(I am the oldest girl of six children)but that I would still have a nice birthday anyway. I must have cried everyday after she said it was impossible for me to go. The day of the concert I didn't want anything else anyone had to offer. My stepfather came in with a big package for me. I hesitated with grief and opened the gift. It was a beautiful new dress. I said thanks and got up to go to my room. He said wait go put your dress on. I said why I'm not going anywhere! I was mad. That's when it happened, He pulled out three tickets to the concert. I started screaming and jumping nonstop. My mother knew all along. I got to the concert and couldn't see a thing. My step dad put me on his shoulders and when the emotions sang "Key to my heart" I cried. As I am doing right now. This album brings back so many memories of good times I hope other people discover how extremely talented these harmonious songtresses really are. No other female group even comes close! They will always have a special place in my heart. Emotions fan for life! DD

The "Magnum Opus" of Girl-group Soul,
By
This review is from: Rejoice (Audio CD)
Along with Love Unlimited, the Emotions defined girl-group soul harmonies in the 1970's. "Rejoice" is the Hutchinson Sisters pre-eminent work, with harmonies as relaxing and refreshing as a Key West sunset.Teaming with Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire) at his creative peak, the Emotions blend spirituality and romance in a way that puts Prince to shame. Whether uptempo (the classic "Best of My Love"), sultry ("Don't Ask My Neighbors", which should be required listening for any female R&B singer"), or from the choir to the masses ("Blessed", a beautiful appreciation of life's gifts), the Emotions were at the top of the game when this album was released in the mid-70's. The fact that this album is available on CD speaks volumes for it's quality, and freshness, 25 years post-release. Much of the classic r&b of the 70s remains unreleased, or available as import only. Kudos to Kalimba/Columbia for seeing that new generations can hear the finest three voice harmonies of the 70s.

Popular music just doesn't get any better.,

The Emotions have to be the most underrated group of all time. There are so many HUGE fans who are loving their music all over the world. This body of work is just one example of their interesting and expert vocalizations.Best of my love was by far the hottest hit of 1977, Don't ask my neighbor was a big R&B hit and Rejoice was a house party favorite. This is a classic set. I recommend to people who enjoy The Emotions to search for their out pf print work. Some examples are: Sincerely(available only on vinyl or cassette)Flowers(CD Import)Come into our world(CD Import,Cassette,Vinyl).Their work on the Stax label is also excellent(Chronicle). The Emotions are far more than this one body of work.

The Baddest Female Vocal Group,
This review is from: Rejoice (Audio CD)
this album is all that.together with the Genius Mind of Maurice White who also help Deniece Williams on her first solo album Maurice does the same here for The Emotions.they had been around a long time.first on Stax with Issac Hayes&crew.Great Talent there. But Maurice White took them to a Whole Different Level.Best of My Love was Funky in 77 and is still Bangin' 23 years later.Don't Ask My Neighbor is a classic Slow-Jam.Nancy Wilson did a remake of this cut but the Original is still the best and Nancy Wilson is a Great Singer.but The Emotions are just like their title you hear the feeling and Emotion in the words&music. they are the Baddest Female Vocal Group ever.so much Depth&Detail. The Album is still solid.

I have big a huge fan of the Emotions even as a kid. It's funny because I was just a baby when they hit it big. But I remeber listening to this albumn containing my favorite "Dont Ask My Neigbors" the sultry ballad. (My favorite song) They have a mix of everything "Best Of My Love" for the dancers and for the gospel lovers there is "Blessed" a mellow grove that gets you feeling the spirit. The Emotions definitly were the best back then and have such qualities and origanal material today that female groups today seem to lack.Chris Gilrath II

I still have not heard anyone harmonize songs like the Emotions, they are the true "Sisters with Voices". I don't know of any female group today or yesterday that can touch these very talented ladies, as I'm writing this review I'm listening to my all time favorite "Blessed" (which has Maurice White's touch) I always get misty eyed listening to that song. I remember singing "Best of My Love" in my high school talent show, everytime I hear it on the radio I have a flashback. My other favorite is "A Feeling Is". I'm still a big fan and their music runs deep for me.

Great Album, Great Songs, But a Terrible Re-Master,

This CD sounds like it was recorded with a sock over the microphones, and sounds muffeled and there is an extreme loss of the midrange on the CD. Until they re-master this, I'd buy the record and convert it digitally if you know how, using free software.

"Emotions breakout album",

In the summer of 1977 the Emotions came out with their second Maurice White produced album and from the start we get the r&b/dicso smash "Best Of My Love" which went number one r&b and pop. This song became their trademark song which is sung by lead singer Wanda Hitchinson and was played in disco's all across the country. This albums is flawless and you can let it play all through but my personal favorites are "Don't Ask My Neighbor","Blessed", and "Rejoice" which are all the last three songs on the album respectively. The second single "Don't Ask My Neighbor" with its laid back and sexy melody was also a big hit off this album, but the best song has go to be the inspirational "Blessed" with its its back and forth tempo and another stunning lead by Wanda showing off her great vocal range on the vamps. The production by Maurice(who also helped out on vocals) and co-producer Clarence McDonald is top notch and the song arrangements are all done by Tom Tom 84, with key members of Earth Wind & Fire(which include bassist Verdine White and drummer Fred White, and guitarist Al McKay) supplying their excellent musicianship along with other great studio musicians of the era. Some of these songs could have been done by EWF which is really not a bad thing considering the band was at a peak moment in their careers creative wise. One of many albums the Emotions collaberated on with Maurice White and their most popular, considering its the only one available on cd. A sure keeper and a must have along, but still waiting on the previous album Flowers to be release on cd which was also great.

Girl Groups - Take Notice !!,
By mandinka_99 (Tallahassee, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rejoice (Audio CD)
If you're looking for a blue-print for a sucessful girl-group, then vocally you need to start with this album. The songs are upbeat and positive without being too preachy or sugary. The vocals are impeccable. En Vogue, Destiny's Child, Xscape, and SWV probably were schooled by the superb harmonies of this classic release! I highly recommend: "BEST OF MY LOVE", "DON'T ASK MY NEIGHBOR", and "A FEELING IS"
