This was my first sci-fi novel. While the book is based around the presence of an intelligent alien entity, the book is really about human relationships and global issues and doesn't contain much sci-fi language that some might find hard to read (myself included). Read this book if you are interested in current global issues like global warming, the emergence of China and wars in the middle east. The author is obviously well informed on many issues and his predictions, while somewhat controversial, could well come true. The last page left me hoping the next book in the series will come out soon - it will be interesting to see what direction the author takes the story.

This book will interest you, if you are interested about how the next 20 years might turn out if governments of the world were forced to act more cooperatively through an external threat. Author Doug Lavers shows good insight into current major international issues and applies a sci-fi benevolent dictatorship to solve them. While the personal interactions of the appointed "overseer" are a bit lame, the analysis of issues and solutions is well done. One can only speculate if the author sees himself as the overseer, made young and virile with ultimate power and authority.

Wow, I haven't seen a book with a title that so effectively tells what it does. Rekindling of Hope is a sci-fi novel through and through, but it does what some of the best fiction does. It provides catharsis; a relief from sad stuff. It focuses on the idea that things in the future may just turn out to be OK. An alien intelligence visits and tries to help humanity. And it is personified as a cat. So it has that going for it. The story involves science and politics and does well by both. It's a refreshing change from most sci-fi set in the future. It's just pleasant.

I enjoyed reading this book. The author looks at current world issues in politics and finance with a unique sci-fi spin. He is clearly well versed in current global issues and predicts possible outcomes, including what could happen if an alien intelligence, "The Bearing", becomes involved with ideas of how to help the human race. I enjoyed the delivery of ideas which includes some witty humour as well as some serious topics, and developing relationships along the way. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

Rekindling of Hope is a fascinating mix of real life drama and emotion with the complexity of today's political problems threatening to spiral out of control.

It is written as a science fiction novel with a benevelent power from outer space needed to intervene to help the world solve its problems. This provides much food for thought - perhaps the world's growing problems do need an external force to help us emerge from constsnt disputes, wars, poverty, and starvation in different parts of the globe.

The author shows that he has a very detailed knowledge of the geopolitical issues that face the world, and a feel for how feelings and emotions are very much part of what drives the human race.

Whilst this is a science fiction novel it is written from a real world perspective, and makes the reader think about the potential for the human race to self destruct. Fortunately this is wrapped up in a very readable story about real world characters and how they interact.

More About the Author

Having embarked on a number of professions, I used my wealth of knowledge and experience to craft Rekindling of Hope. After originally earning a degree in chemistry at Oxford University with a topic in solid-state physics for my thesis, I worked at a stock broker's office for a period of time before taking an MBA. I went on to work as an engineering cost analyst and later, a money market dealer at Ford's Research and Engineering Centre. I moved to the South Coast of England, where I met my wife, and the two of us relocated to Melbourne, Australia. There, I held a number of senior positions in the finance industry before becoming a financial planner. Now retired, I enjoy playing bridge, gardening, reading, skiing, travel, and debating green and ecological issues with my daughter.
