I collect self help books. I happened upon this book while going through my mom's things after her death. It is an older book, but with a dramatic difference from other self help books. I have learned so much positive information that actually makes sense. It is about compassion, intelligent conversation and actions. It shows how we over-react to situations and then things get all out of porportion. It also tells how to fix it and this is the one book that suggests that you alone, without the help of your partner, can put your relationship back on the right track. It is as basic and yet profound as can be. The main ideas is to use positive reinforcement and positive therapy to enable permanent change in relationships and their dynamics.

my husband and I have done a lot of work on our relationship, and were at a crucial turning point (for the worse!) when a friend suggested this book. It was incredibly helfpul and counter much of what the typical relationship books say --- don't talk about the past! Don't go into couples counseling! (I had been saying we need to go back and look at the past, we need to do couple's counseling, my husband was totally against it). It's really about connecting with your loving feelings for each other. (If you are driving down the road with your spouse and all is well, and suddenly you realize he didn't take out the trash the night before and that makes you angry, is it really a good idea to bring that up just to prove a point or do you want to reconnect with the good feelings and let that anger pass by like a cloud?) This little book is packed with simple thoughts like that which have transformed my need to be right over my husband for all of his (supposed) infractions -- not an easy task!

I have read and re-read this valuable book for more than 10 years. I have given it (new and used) to every newlywed and engaged couple I know ... including family. This book should be REQUIRED reading before anyone is allowed to get married OR divorced.

This was recommended by a lay member of the ministry. Yet, there's no religion, as such, mentioned. It immediately became my go-to book for all relationships. It nails the ills of talk therapy, providing ring-true reasoning. I've given copies away, bought more and will do the same again. I've read and reread this small gem to remind me what's really my goal in relationships. I've watched a close relative incorporate it's clear, specific direction and find relief and vastly increased peace where total confusion previously reigned. Have read, studied and applied thousands of pages and hours of training and pondering in human relationships. Nothing produces immediate, practical relationship improving results like this quiet, humble, indispensible handbook.

This is hands down the very best work on relationshps you are ever likely to find. Applying his deceptively simple principles really works. But there is a catch, because (unlike the one guy who gave this book only two stars) you will need to let go of judgment and start focusing hard on what is RIGHT with your spouse or partner. So simple, yet it works so well. So my advice: Buy it. Read it. Apply it. We did. And WOW!

This book offers practical insights into how to better navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of human relationships, especially man/woman relationships. Especially insightful was the chapter that covered moods and how to react to the ever-changing moods that sometimes control our lives. I would welcome more application advice on dismissing negative or harmful thoughts and thought patterns. Overall, this quick read was well worth the time and cost.

Most books on relationships come with great advice and tips for how to make it "work". Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work even for the authors who are more often than not having trouble with their own relationships. Here Dr. Pransky gives the reader a fresh take on an old subject that leaves you with an understanding of how people (and yourself:-) actually function psychologically. An understanding that immediately plays out with an increase in closeness, compassion and love in any relationship. Incredibly hopeful to realize that you don't have to work on "it" - only understand something simple and basic about the human condition. A must read for anybody who wants truly fulfilling relationships...
