Relationship Marketing for Solopreneurs: How to Build Rewarding Connections in Work and Life by Jim Sheard and Larry Keltto and has just been released in paperback.
Consider Relationship Marketing the "white hat" guide for building sustainable working partnerships. That is, shortcuts will get you burned so you better use the tried and tested techniques that have been used successfully for years. They write, "don't take advantage of a customer's lack of knowledge", and "admit mistakes" while also stressing to be "true to yourself" and "fair to yourself on pricing".
This back and forth "help yourself while helping your partners " serves as their core belief that zero-sum games are out and mutually-beneficial relationships are the only way Solopreneurs can sustainably grow in a Social Media-driven world.
Larry and Jim's book makes you stop and contemplate, almost philosophize your networking efforts. Relationship Marketing is delivered in common sense 3-page chapters, or "keys", such as, "Encourage Others", "Ask Questions", and "Be a Team Player".
Just because it's common sense doesn't mean Solopreneurs necessarily apply them. A few chapters I was reading and thinking, "of course...everyone does that" and then realized I was doing the complete opposite, no doubt taking a shortcut. I found their tips to be a great wake up call to leverage the support of others by forming substantial working bonds with them.
They sprinkle personal anecdotes and quotes that are less instructive than suggestive. This is one of those books that I could see as an audio version that I could play during rush hour traffic to calm me down while reminding me the basic rules of relationship building for Solopreneurs.
