Cancer treatment has never been described with such a moving mixture of horror, scathing wit and love. Reading "Relatively Indolent but Relentless" will bring you closer to those who have been ill and prepare you for your turn. I hope Mr Freedman is with us for a long, long time.

I am a brother of Matt, the author. He has the kind of humor that voices something deeper than you thought you were allowed to say, or even to realize, evoking laughs that come from shared pangs of recognition. Matt has always had an ability to instantly and effortlessly transform the essence of a moment into words or a drawing or both with a prowess that astonishes. The family diner table of our childhood regularly had intellectual notables as guests, and young Matt would turn a phrase that illuminated the the unspoken aspiration and pretense, infused with wit that embraced rather than stung. All would be awed, in part by his virtuosity but even more so at seeing the intangible reified, granite density conjured from the ineffable.

Matt has used his gifts of word and eye to cold forge from the nether world of untreatable cancer the gird work that underpins the short ride for each of us in, through, and ineluctably out of life. What might we report if we had the imperative, the courage, and the gifts to give it form?

Roz Chast's Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant helps readers feel less alone and even laugh about some of the most disturbing and horrible aspects of eldercare. Matt Freedman's Cancer Treatment Journal had the same effect on me. I usually curl up with novels or cheerier fare. But here is this eloquent and warm and wonderful man who, open-eyed, is chronicling his nightmare in a journal and then sharing it with us. It's generous and heroic and yes, sometimes harrowing and heartbreaking. I hope his book does well and he stays as well as possible for as long as possible.

I went thru the same treatments as Matt did, and reading it was deja vu for me. the thing that I loved the most was the drawings..pure genius! I"ve recommended it to my speech therapist, nurses, and friends.Really, everyone should read it. a truly inspiring document.

A wrenching and painfully honest look at one man's cancer treatment ordeal, brightened by the author's whimsical illustrations and his enduring sense of humor. Recommended for anyone facing radiation treatment, and anyone who, for whatever reason, wants to understand the experience from the patient's perspective.
