A Fun Read,
By
This review is from: Relax, It's Only A Ghost (Hardcover)
I read this book in a day, due to the conversational style in which it was written. Echo Bodine starts off her book with a short bio of her background, then launches into her case stories. Two of them, Bobby Mackey's Music World (Kentucky) and The Log Cabin in the Woods (Colorado Springs) were featured on the program, Sightings. I was just as intrigued with her story as I was with the Sightings account. I enjoyed every story, but found myself wishing for a more detailed account. She was not always successful at banishing the ghosts, which made the book seem more real.Bodine gives you basic instructions on how to "cleanse" your house should it contain a ghost or two. She also recommends that you don't search the phonebook for a medium, but to inquire around for one. What I didn't agree with was her statement in regard to sighting ability. Several skeptics have seen ghosts, although they quickly rationalize what they saw. Definitely worth reading.

Relax, It's Only A Ghost,

I received Echo Bodine's newest book on a day when (thanks to new neighbors) I had just finished working a 10 hour day on 2 hours sleep. I thought I'd glance through the first few pages before finally nodding off, and ending up reading it from cover to cover. A book that I really couldn't put down! As a fan of Echo's other books, I realize that I'm not totally objective, but all I can say is she's done it again!Echo presents material that is new to many people, but writes in a way that makes you feel as if you are having a conversation with a neighbor or close friend. The appeal of this book is more than facts to impress the novice or simply curious. Many readers with similar experiences will be relieved to find validation of their own abilities; for those of us who have worked in the metaphysical field for many years, Echo always has something new to teach us about the "other side." Unlike many gifted people who have opted for the fame and sensationalism of telling the world about their gifts, Echo's desire is to teach and help. I, for one, am thrilled that she has chosen to share her gifts with the world.

An Amusing Handling of a Serious Subject,

A friend loaned me this book and I read it in almost one sitting. Echo has a great way of expressing herself. Love the comment about her fiance who gave her "that sort of blank Lutheran stare he gets whenever I mention spotting a ghost." Having a teacher whose name is Mrs. Olson struck me as funny. You don't usually think of psychics and ghost hunters in Minnesota!I had never heard that ghosts are low energy and that is why we can't always see them, but that makes sense. Am going to read her other books as soon as I can. Really enjoy her light-hearted style. No doom and gloom here.

"Ghosts are people, not pets.",

The title to this review is my favorite sentence from this charming little book. Taken out of context, to be sure, and certainly the word 'charming' is a strange one to attach to a book about ghosts, but true nevertheless. Echo Bodine is one of a family of psychically gifted folks, who utilize their skills in beneficial ways; healings, readings, ghostbustings. Along with many brief descriptions of various ghostbustings she's done--either with her brother Michael--or alone, Ms. Bodine also offers tips on discovering your own ghost(s) if you have one (or more of them - they're sociable creatures and generally like to be around others of their ilk). If your child claims an 'invisible friend' it may well be a ghost, but neither you nor your child should be alarmed by this happening, and indeed, the remedy for convincing the ghost to leave the premises is quite simple. Even a child can do it. Ghosts are seldom malign; rather, they're souls who are stuck. They need to go on to the other side, but for a variety of reasons, have chosen not to. Joined by the persuasive efforts of her guides, (I'd like to have been told more about these helpful creatures) and the occasional angel, Ms. Bodine and her brother have rarely met a ghost they couldn't convince to leave the premises. The most common cause of such a failure is that the earthling didn't really want the ghost to leave, and ever accomodating, the ghost obliged. This really is a delightful little book. I wish it had been twice as long, and told us about the guides, and a bit more of these most interesting ghosts. We all need to send positive thoughts requesting volume two, please.

Easy, breezy read!,

This review is from: Relax, It's Only A Ghost: My Adventures with Spirits, Hauntings and Things That Go Bump in the Night (Hardcover)
The author, Echo Bodine, writes about two of my favorite subjects in this book: psychics and ghosts. She covers a great deal of ground in this small book and her writing style is warm and friendly, if a bit immature. Some readers may be annoyed by the writing style and the fact that Ms. Bodine occasionally repeats herself but overall this is a good read.

Ghostbusting, Psychics, and Spirit Guides,

This review is from: Relax, It's Only a Ghost: My Adventures with Spirits, Hauntings and Things That Go Bump in the Night (Paperback)
This little book, just slightly over 100 pages, provides insight into the world of Echo Bodine, ghostbuster and psychic. Ms. Bodine gives us many case examples of what she does, and she supplies us with the details that make us understand how difficult it can be to convince a ghost to go on to his/her new life on the other side.
Ms. Bodine spends a bit of time at the beginning of her book explaining how she came to understand and develop her talents for seeing and communicating with the dead. At first reluctant, she began to see her gift as a valuable service to those whose homes are the earthbound choices for the dearly departed. The author then spends a good portion of the book on what the reader really wanted; she gives us details of the many cases she's been on and even provides us with tips on convincing the dead it's time to move on. We realize that the dead are as varied as they were in life, and some of them have big issues that are unresolved. Ms. Bodine does her best to rid the homes of the pesky spirits and help said spirits at the same time. Regardless of whether or not you believe in Ms. Bodine's abilities, this is a fun book with some interesting ideas and circumstances. Fun and informative, this one is an enjoyable read.

Recommended for young adults,
By Jennifer Stannard (Gloucester, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Relax, It's Only A Ghost: My Adventures with Spirits, Hauntings and Things That Go Bump in the Night (Hardcover)
Echo tells us of her experiences with her psychic development, and her acquired knowledge about the world of spirits. Although the text is somewhat juvenile, the book reveals information about the spirit world that I have never seen in other books (eg. ghosts will come back if you say their name within the first three days, after you have "sent them away"). Overall, it is a comfortable read about ghostly encounters. This book is a great introduction to the world of ghosts, for young adults or those slightly scared of the idea of ghosts. I would recommend this book to those who are new to this kind of topic.

Relax, It's Only a Book,
This review is from: Relax, It's Only A Ghost (Hardcover)
I certainly like Bodine's breezy way of writing, but I expected a little more from this than the shallow job I received. I wish she had gone into research about the spirits she encountered so we would know for a fact that they existed as she claims. Instead, she repeats herself often about the rules of ghosts, and tacks on a ridiculous chapter about dealing with a ghost. Of course, she also claims the ultimate Catch-22: if you believe in the spirits, you can see them; if you do not see them, you are not a believer. I will wait until I see them. This was a really short read, but I wish it had more substance.

Previously Published Author?????,

This review is from: Relax, It's Only A Ghost (Hardcover)
I had a hard time trying to figure out what audience this book was directed towards? It was written in a light hearted format, which was refreshing, however I couldn't figure out if Ms. Bodine was trying to reach an adult or young adult audience? The shallow depth of this material, and the fact that she kept repeating herself in this short volume made me believe that this was directed at a children or young adult audience. Her writing style was quite bothersome and was quite juvenile. I couldn't decide if her overuse of slang was just poor writing, or if she was trying to be "hip" for a younger audience. I can't believe if this was written for an adult audience that an editor would have allowed this book to be published in this format. I read the previous reviews, and could only come to the conclusion that the high ratings were from friends of Ms. Bodin'e who reviewed this book. If a friend loans you this book or you find it at the library, it is a light read, but don't waste your hard earned cash on this volume.
