Book Description

January 5, 2000
Relax, This Won't Hurt is the ultimate answer for any woman who's ever wished she could spend unlimited time quizzing her doctor during a routine office visit. What's the ideal contraceptive for me? How can I make sure I don't have cancer? What can I do about cramps and PMS? What should I do if I have problems getting pregnant? What do all those lab test reports mean to me? Should I take estrogen?

Just as she does as a regular on NBC-TV's Today show, Dr. Judith Reichman, in her distinctive humorous and down-to-earth fashion, offers understandable answers to the questions women are too shy or too rushed to ask their own doctors. Readers will feel as though they have had a private consultation with this exceptional physician. Based on the latest research findings, the book comprehensively covers below-the-belt health and beyond, including mental health issues and more. Plus: the latest on genetics and health, which medical tests to have, and a top ten list of ways women can take care of themselves.

Amazon.com Review

Relax, This Won't Hurt is Today show correspondent Judith Reichman's offering to women of all ages whose knowledge of medical issues unique to their bodies is woefully inadequate. Beginning with the teens and moving forward by decades, she discusses the concerns that women encounter, dread, or may not know anything about, providing in-depth information along the way on how to best maintain health and address issues as they arise. Reichman, a gynecologist who has authored two popular women's health books, I'm Not in the Mood and I'm Too Young to Get Old, chattily responds to questions girls and women often have, such as:
  • "How do I know if my period is normal?"
  • "Why do I get so many bladder infections?"
  • "I took fertility drugs. Does this mean I'm at increased risk for ovarian cancer?" and
  • "How do I know when I'm in menopause?"

Each chapter focuses on the myriad issues relevant to the woman's stage in life--from hormonal changes and menstruation in the teenage years to sexual activity and STDs, endometriosis, fibroids, infertility, cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and heart disease--outlining the appropriate considerations or steps to take when confronting such issues. In each chapter she gives her recommendation for the frequency and type of health examinations women should have as they age, and throughout she is candid in her disapproval of smoking, excessive alcohol and caffeine intake, poor diet, and lack of exercise. While not as multidimensional and holistic in her evaluation of women's health as Dr. Christiane Northrup is in her classic Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, Reichman nonetheless does a service for all women by illuminating in simple and friendly terms the attributes, the necessary processes, and the weaknesses of the female body. Especially for women between their teens and 30s, this book provides indispensable preparation for what is to come and what is currently under way within their bodies. --Rebecca Wright

From Library Journal

Busy gynecologist Reichman, here answering questions women are usually afraid to ask, is a medical correspondent for Today, host of two PBS specials on menopause, and author of best sellers like I'm Not in the Mood.

4.0 out of 5 stars TONS OF INFORMATION, February 26, 2002
By
Sandra D. Peters "Seagull Books" (Prince Edward Island, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What is impressive about this book is that it covers a wide range of women's health issues: hormone changes, osteoporosis, menopause, bladder infections, fertility/infertility, cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, and the importance of diet and exercise. While the book covers a vast variety of issues, there are some topics that are quite brief and not as detailed as you will find in other books. Although there are topics which cover virtually every age of a woman's life, the emphasis is placed on the teen years through to the thirties. If you are looking for a more in-depth book, you may find what you are looking for in "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" by Dr. Christiane Northrup, and if approaching menopause, be sure to read, "The Wisdom of Menopause" also by Dr. Christiane Northrup. Northrup's books are complete, in-depth, extremely well written and both are more than deserving of five-star ratings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Concise Book About Women's Health, January 8, 2001

This review is from: Relax, This Won't Hurt: Painless Answers to Women's Most Pressing Health Questions (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book for any woman from Teens to Age 100! It is like sitting down and having a chat with a friend who happens to be a doctor. There is no stuffiness, institutional reading but a concise place to learn about what is happening to your body as a woman ages, what tests she needs and what the results could be and possibly mean without causing panic. The reader doesn't feel like she is either being spoke down to or that the information is so technical, it flies over one's head.

The reader is not only treated to knowledge to empower her to good health to grow old by but the material is also practically related in Dr. Reichman's sharing of her own stories.

I think this is a must have for any woman's personal library!
