Brings back good memories,

This was a very long awaited release for me. I bought the original LP when new in 1969, my senior year in high school. Through the years I have worn out three copies of that piece of vinyl. I first bought it because of the groups previous album The Electric Prunes: I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night). Was I ever surprised to hear what was recoreded. I don't know exactly what the attraction ever was but I have loved Release of An Oath since first spinning it. I highly recommend this to anyone who just likes to close their eyes and listen to classical style inspirational music with a rock flair.

Forget the garage rock of Had Too Much to Dream. That and this version of the Electric Prunes have only name in common.
Better to think of the windowpane church fright of Mass in F Minor. The dark orchestrations of David Axlerod that made that so unique are also on Release Of An Oath: Searing acid guitars, footsteps of God bass, echoing gothic drums. This is the 3:47 in the morning 1968 FM music that everyone but hardcore music people, and perhaps sampling DJs, forgot. Amazing both for its historical strangeness and obscurity and for its overriding nuance. GET IT

Sorry to have to disagree with the other post, but I know from it's first
release in the late 60's, this is the real Electric Prunes! This is one of those lost-in-the-vault classics from the psychedelic era- one of the many strange branches that people took off on during their search to find the way... music was so diverse then! You don't have to be religious to get this, but maybe you have to be having an out of body experience, no? Over the years this sure has grown on me, recommended for any fringe hunters!

Psych, Judaica, funky soul feel... this is brilliant, just brilliant. So what if the the original Prunes didn't record it? Shorter than I expected but but all the more reason to relish it. "Holy Are You" is worth the price of the album alone.

An elite group of LA session musicians were recruited to complete the concept album, written and directed by David Axelrod, and produced by Dave Hassinger (the E. Prunes producer and owner of the name). This was a composition written by Axelrod (producer, Lou Rawls & Cannonball Adderley) and was a follow-up to Mass In F Minor on Reprise Records.
The musicians who recorded "Oath' were Earl Palmer on drums, Howard Roberts (G), vocals were by Richard J. Whetstone,Don Randi (keyboards), Carol Kaye (Bass), Gary Coleman (percussion), Lou Morell (G). Oddly, enough "Oath" seems to have a life of its own, more than ten hip-hop artist have sampled various tracks from 'Oath' - "Holy Are You" was recently sampled by Rakim (The Seventh Seal - 2007 CD); Ali & Gipp (No God But You - 2007 CD); Fat Joe ('95); Howie B ('97), to name a few. In London, a recording and DVD of "David Axelrod Live at Royal Festival Hall" was released January 2007 and featured Richard Ashcroft (lead singer of The Verve) singing "Holy Are You" from Release Of An Oath. For a recording made in 1968 to resurface and be re-released, then to be sampled multiple times by hip-hop artists almost forty years later...it makes you wonder!

Canciones recomendadas: "Kol Nidre", "Holy Are You" y "The Adoration".

Electric Prunes - 'Release Of An Oath' (Collector's Choice Music),
By
This review is from: Release of An Oath (Audio CD)
Every bit as much of a true disappointment as this Electric Prunes imposter (technically speaking) band's 'Just Good Old Rock And Roll'. Only two cuts here that did anything for me at all were "Holy Are You" and maybe "Individual Confession". Plus, what's up with the duration of a measly 24 minutes? I'm sure someone could've easily located some old radio spots, live tracks, odd Prunes cuts of some sort within their vaults.

Meh...,

The first 2 tracks were recorded by the original band, but when they didn't record the material (which they didn't write and had forced on them basically) fast enough, they got replaced by session musicians... their contract didn't even let them have rights to their band name. So the first 2 tracks are theirs, though not really, and the rest aren't. I was disappointed with it... its not horrible music, but its not the Prunes.
