5.0 out of 5 stars Funk gets stronger, January 12, 2005
This review is from: Release Yourself (Audio CD)
There is something about this one that separates it from other GCS lp's. This one has a real 'Southern Fried Soul' thang goin for it. The opener, with Larry on all instruments, is just orgasmic wholesome funk that would bring a tear to Stevie Wonder's ear. 'Release Yo'self' is just stompin' hard funk, tight as a Louisiana virgin! 'Got To Get Through It' is an arrangers dream, very Sly Stone in feel, with Larry's usual uplifting and optomistic lyrics. 'I believe in You' is just slap bass, down and dirrrty, with Larry pouring out that voice like some enormous vat of chocolate.

'Tis Your Kind of Music,' what a dark and moody feeling! Moog and arp doin' overtime. 'Hey Mr Writer' is back to Southern style stompin,' with doo wop vocals and infectious grooves... straight into 'Feel The Need,' more of the same. Check out the bridge, the horns sound like a frieght train passin through! This is one funky album. Never enough GCS.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Don't Fight The Feelin', It Might Not Come No More...", March 23, 2000
This review is from: Release Yourself (Audio CD)
Clavinet heavy, funk box ticky with bass thumbing at it's speed of sound limit, in my opinion, this is Larry Graham w/ GCS's greatest. Because of it's fire and brimstone delivery it has several memorable perfomances...the aforementioned title track, and "Feel the Need" (Feel it--Feelitfeelit!) are simply the tip of the iceburg. Don't overlook or avoid it because of it's spiritual message. It is way funky!
