This is the second version of this CD I have owned I like it that much that I gave one away reluctantly to a pal in England. From the moment this album starts you know you are in for a ride, and what a ride it is. From the beauty of 'The Chess Players' to the sheer intensity of 'Gearheads' , this album just overwhelms the listener with an ever-changing palette of different sounds. Is it country? Is it Jazz, Is it Rockabilly?. This is the kind of music you can't put into a category....simple as that.
One reviewer likes Hank Garland...sure, but that is comparing apples to oranges..for a start, there is NO-ONE like Joey DeFrancesco around...and the sound that these two guys produce is totally unique....it's a pity Danny is no longer with us, another one of these collaborations would have surely been a milestone, if this isn't already.

WOW......the audacity of some of these reviewers! Danny Gatton: psychobilly, unpolished, technically limited, not a jazz player, in over his head....
What utter purist dribble. Danny Gatton was simply one of the most phenomonal guitar virtuosos in recorded history. No single style or genre could contain such an enormous talent. His mixing and blending of many different styles, the nearly unlimited technique, the soulful ability to create deeply touching melodies spontaneously has not been equaled or approached. This is a superb album that amply displays Danny's fabulous fiery Jazz interpretations. Disregard the nonsense of those previous reviewers. You may not like Danny Gatton, which is your choice, but to speak derogatorily of this man's music and ability merely shows you to be an ignorant fool. RIP Danny! Thank you for all the GREAT music!

This album is simply scary. Gatton is on fire and DeFrancesco never gives in. They go toe to toe and duke it out with some masterful soloing. A must have for guitar and/or hammond B3 fans. Is it possible to give six stars?

I was a sound tech for a number of years. I used to have this CD in my intermission rotation. No matter what genre of music the audience came to see, they were all blown away by the smokin' chops displayed by both musicians on this disc.

I'm sure they had a couple of assistants with fire extinguishers in the studio to put out the flames that were, no doubt, started by Gatton and DeFrancesco during their soloing! This is one HOT album. The playing is jazzy, funky, tasty and brutally over the top [your jaw will hurt from hanging all the way down to the floor throughout the course of the album...]. Add to this the beautiful production values [beefed-up bass response, too] and you have a world-class album in every sense of the word. A must for any jazz head.

Out of all the Joey Defrancesco CD's I have, I would say the this is my favorite one! Danny Gatton plays a real funky & bluesy guitar along with Joey's raunchy B-3 organ sound. I always crank up the stereo when I play this CD.

This album is a "Classic". It's everything I hoped it would be and more.
Gatton and Defrancesco are in top form, bangin' out some open road cruisin' Jazz ! Wonderful Bassist and Drummer accompaniment. Take a Jazz setup, insert some Blues, hillbilly Jazz, a whole lot'o fun, great interplay and hit blend! You need this album, even if you only got "a lick o' sense" !

Gatton and DeFrancesco created one the most awesome jazz albums. I never tire of listening to it.
"Blues On The Half Shell" induces vertigo it is so powerful. The bass is tight and perfect; DeFrancesco is dizzying. It explodes. What a tragedy Gatton succumbed to his demons, like Lenny Breau.

The association of Danny Gatton with Joey De Francesco is fantastic. I love the sound of the telecaster with hammond organ !
