Editorial Reviews

"Relentless" by Eric Gales is a blues rock masterpiece, created by one of the most revered artists on today's blues rock scene. A smokin' guitarist, Gales wowed crowds on the Experience Hendrix tour as he traded riffs with fellow guitar master Eric Johnson. On "Relentless," Gales' no holds-barred guitar playing and masterful vocals combine for some of the best blues rock ever recorded.

I was wondering how Eric Gales was going to top his last CD, "The Story of My Life," but somehow he did! This is definitely his best piece of work yet! A great mixture of straight blues and more modern blues-rock songs! His guitar chops and tone are KILLER! This HAS to be the best blues-rock album in the last 5 years, at least! The only other player who reminds me of Eric, style-wise, is Joe Bonamassa, but Joe is more eclectic, whereas Eric seems to concentrate more on blues and comes off as more of a "natural" bluesman than Joe. He throws some effects and little twists in his soloing, that makes you go, "Huh? How did he do that?" And the sound is TOP NOTCH. His drummer and bassist also deliver killer performances and are as tight as wallpaper! I love the sound of the drums--really punchy and in your face! Nothing is buried at all in the mix--a fantastic job by the sound engineers!

I've always thought that Eric's vocal ability suffered somewhat compared to his undeniable guitar virtuosity, but on this CD his singing sounds much better than ever--a little fuller, clearer sound to his voice--a fine job!

I'd love to see this guy live, but for some reason he never seems to be on tour--???? Hopefully he'll get on the road soon...

This CD is INDISPENSABLE for all blues-rock fans!

This album is aptly titled. It is "Relentless" kickass, take no prisoners blues rock from the first note to the last. Yes, there is a Hendrix influence but there is so much more. It's funky, boogie, straight rock, and even a little psychedelia. The best blues/blues-rock CD I've heard in ages. Not one bad song. He co-wrote all of them, sings and plays killer guitar. This man needs to be heard. He is as good or better than anyone out there.

Eric Gales has been putting out brilliant guitar albums for close to 20 years. His output was sporadic at first, but recently has picked up. His latest disc displays his full maturity as a player and singer. The comparisons to Jimi Hendrix are obvious - black guy playing hard blues on a right-handed Stratocaster left-handed - and rightly so. With SRV gone, Eric could well be the successor to the Hendrix style of guitar playing.

Relentless is indeed relentless if you are looking for hard blues rock guitar playing. There are 12-bar blues variations, combined with psychedelic hard rock (Block the Sun), funk (Make It There), epic slow-burning anthemic blues (On the Wings of Rock and Roll), and even a straight-ahead hard rock instrumental (Universal Peacepipe).

Gales even has a Jimi-like voice making the comparison even more complete. I would recommend any of Eric's albums, particularly Picture of a Thousand Faces, and That's What I Am. Relentless is another great guitar record from this guy, and as good a starting point as any for someone new to him.

Every now and then an artist rises from the multitude of fine musicians alive today and distinguishes themselves as a true star and a force to be reckoned with, Eric Gales is that musician. Establishing his musical ability while still a teenager Eric had some tough times that followed. There is no need to go into his personal life, but on the worlds stage Eric's music shines, he is a true master of the fretboard and has brought back to music an element that has been missing for a long time; fierce musicianship, and epic song writing. Relentless should be a part of everyone who appreciates Blues Rock and fine, fine guitar playing with beautiful phrasing and chops to spare. Eric Gales is the real deal: 5 stars.

I've listened to this album all day off and on and it is truly incredible. Hearing songs like The Liar makes me want to sit down with Eric and have him help me improve my playing a bit. Being from Memphis, I've heard Eric for years. This CD is by far the best one he's put out. If you're even thinking about it, pick it up...it's awesome. Can't wait to catch him playing the next time he comes back home to Memphis.
