Product Description

Amazon.com

The Reliance Controls 30 Amp power inlet box is designed for outdoor use and can be hardwired directly to Reliance Controls transfer switches or panels, eliminating need for cords running through windows or doors. This rain-tight, rust-proof unit includes an NEMA L14-30P inlet plug, six knockout holes, and push-in wire connections. Using one of the four combination 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch knockouts (one on each side, bottom and back), the power inlet box can be wired directly to the transfer switch or panel. The exclusive patented design provides generous wiring space and facilitates rough-in. The face of the box is removable for easy placement and wiring. It is cUL 1008 listed and covered by a 5-year warranty.

Important Information

Safety Warning
If this product is not used with an approved transfer switch, it is not allowed by the NEC to supply power from a portable generator to a premises wiring system because of serious safety concerns.

Good quality, easy to install and looks nice.

My only complaint of this box is you can't feed it with conduit from the top as the way the cover comes off both the front and top come off as one piece.

This power cord Inlet box is excellent quality.

Summary - This is a well built generator inlet box that is easy to install and use.

Background - I purchased this box to go with gas powered generator (Briggs & Stratton Elite Series 30471 10,000 Watt Briggs & Stratton 2100 Series OHV Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel Kit), and a 30 AMP, 7500W generator cable (Reliance Controls PC3040 40-Feet 30-Amp L14-30 Generator Power Cord for Up to 7500-Watt Generators). I decided on 8/3 Romex to connect between the inlet box and the breaker panel. At the breaker panel, I decided on an Interlock Kit (available at my local super-box hardware store) rather than a manual transfer switch such as Reliance Controls 31410CRK Pro/Tran 10-Circuit 30 Amp Generator Transfer Switch Kit With Transfer Switch, 10-Foot Power Cord, And Power Inlet Box For Up To 7,500-Watt Generators. This allows me have more control over my panel and prevents any back-feed down the power lines. To let everyone know the power was back on, I also purchased a nifty little box that tells you power has returned, Reliance Controls THP108 PowerBack Utility Power Return Alert Home Monitoring Products, and a Baby Monitor (See my review of the power return alarm for that story!),

Packaging - The packaging was adequate and protected the device in transit.

very sturdy box, easy to mount, and the plug will accept 8 gauge wire if you are so inclined (as I was).

The picture is actually of a L14-20 connector box (with the locking lug pointing away from the center of the lug circle). The L14-30 standard actually has the locking lug point toward the center.

If you try to match the lug patterns to your cable - this box won't work with the 20 amp generator cables. In fact, if you blow up the picture, you can see that the picture is actually of a 20amp rated inlet box.

i used this product for a portable generator connection mounted on the house to feed the circuit panel , using a lock out tag out system instead of a transfer switch because i wanted to energize to whole circuit box instead of just a select few breakers . i'm running an 8k watt 10k peak output generator with 10/4 gauge wire , and this product meet my needs and expectations . . . heavy duty and good quality product that i would recommend for use !

I'll preface this by saying I am a licensed electrician and have installed close to 50 of these boxes over the past couple years. These boxes are nema 3r and are of good quality I have yet to have any of them fail. This inlet fits the 30amp 220/11v twist lock cord commonly found at the Home Depot. Couple this unit with a transfer switch and you have a very safe and reliable way of feeding your home with a generator. This is the exact same unit most electrical supply houses sell.

My only complaint of this box is you can't feed it with conduit from the top as the way the cover comes off both the front and top come off as one piece. You HAVE to do your wire entries either from the side or bottom. This is not a deal killer but the installs look much better with the outlet below the panels rather than off to the side.

I bought this a long time ago.... just looking at stuff that I never replied on. I live in NJ and had my generator running the whole house through this for five days during the "Super Storm Sandy" If you are going to hook your home up to use a generator for back up power, YOU MUST BUY THIS!!!!! Yea I wrote the same thing for the cord... you need both of these items. I cut this box in where my central air unit is outside. I have a breaker box outside and it is a 220v connection... when power goes out, I pull the generator to the front of my shed, put a padlocked chain on it to the shed, and run the cord over to this box that is mounted on the side of the house. I can test to see if the power is back on by shutting off the AC breaker INSIDE the house and turning the main back on. If nothing then the main goes back off and I turn the AC breaker back on and the generator back-feeds through that line. I am glad I did all this BEFORE we had the string of storms last summer.
