Filling to or above the vent causes water to leak out the vent hole.

They can get dented a little on the corners because the material is not as thick as I would like, thus the 4 star rating.

Great product, we have this in the car for camping trips so we have back-up drinking water for long trips.

The 3-gallon size is nice - easy to lift and pour, and multiple jugs are easy to pack in a car, but the factory spout gasket leaks (replace with 1-1/2" drain gasket) and the vent is in the wrong place - causing a truly full jug to weep at the vent plug. Come on, Reliance, move the vent plug to the sloping part of the handle! Once modified, it is a nice unit, but it should have been properly engineered in the first place.

I've bought a few of these in the past and they're pretty good jugs. I bought the last ones for a friend's birthday and another for myself. I use these for hunt/camping trips and also river trips because they are not big and bulky. Even though you have a filtration system for the river, you want to carry a few jugs of water and my river friends like to carry these on their rafts and I've carried them on my inflatable kayak because they have kind of a slender design and fit in the smaller nooks and crannies. They're pretty tough and get handled rather roughly but stand up well to the abuse. They can get dented a little on the corners because the material is not as thick as I would like, thus the 4 star rating. The only other downside I can see with this jug is there is a spout cap that you put on the spout when it is in use to keep out dirt, etc. and it just snaps on and can get lost easily if you don't keep tabs on it. If it had a line to keep it attached to the main spout, it would be better and less likely to get lost but I guess you could rig something yourself with a string. Overall, it's a good jug and I've used them for probably 20 years. I can never find this small size in any stores, locally or otherwise, only the 5 gal. size. I've always had to order this 3 gal. size on line. Amazon had a real good price and they have fast service.

I bought this water container for use on a 3-day camping trip. Access into the campsite was through rugged high altitude 4-wheel drive rocky roads. I pounded the vent cap in before leaving based on some of the other reviews. The container did just fine and there was no leakage. I just ordered another one.

I ordered three of these earlier this month for emergency water storage. Just got around to really inspecting and filling them. One of the three has a hole in it and a bottom corner is mashed in. It arrived this way. Totally unusable. The other two can be filled only to just below the vent which is on the slope on the upper back of the jug. Filling to or above the vent causes water to leak out the vent hole. Vent plug is too loose to allow filling beyond that point. There is a lot of room in the container for more water but you just can't fill them all the way. Am very dissatisfied.

If you keep this jug upright, it won't leak. I found out the hard way, but the lesson is learned.

Yes, it leaks. I was given this jug, so returning it wasn't an option. It fits perfectly on its side under the back seat of the truck, so I really need it to be water tight. I spent $1 for a size 000 rubber stopper and an O-ring at the local hardware store. The O-ring is 1/8" thick, and 1 5/8" inside diameter (1 7/8" outside diameter). Here's what I did:
1. Enlarge the vent hole with a 3/8" drill. Smooth the edges of the hole with a file: any rough spots will allow seeping. Push the rubber stopper firmly into the hole.
2. Take the pour spout out and store it some other way. I think I'll tape it under the handle. Place the plastic disc inside the screw-on cap, with the O ring inside. Then put the cap on and tighten it.
Voila, no leaks!
I'm giving this jug 4 stars because it is sturdy, small enough to carry easily when full, and like I said, it fits in the small space where I want to store it. 3 gallons is the perfect amount for a 72 hour emergency kit. I'm planning to buy a few more.

Got this to take water on camping trips. Plastic vent plug works loose and gets everything wet. Would never purchase again. Junk for what it is intended for. Waited too long to try and could not send back. Trashed them.

I wanted a water container to rinse off after the beach and also to hydrate my dogs. The 3-gallon is cost effective (13 bucks each) and perfect because it isn't heavy. My only suggestion is you need to place this water jug in a plastic storage container or something else that will keep it upright because it will leak if to tips over in your trunk or the bed of your truck. The leak issue is the only reason why I gave it 3 Stars.
