Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7. This book demonstrates the variety of world religions and presents a few of their most basic beliefs, practices, and histories, but offers little beyond a general introduction. Beginning with the ancient religions of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, Mexico, Peru, and the Norse, Ganeri goes on to cover the "People of the Book" (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam); religions of India, China, and Japan; and the "spirit religions" of North and South America, Africa, and Australasia. She even more briefly describes "new religions" such as Rastafarianism, Baha'ism, Hare Krishnas, Mennonite, Mormon, the Unification Church, and New Age. The text is clear and maintains respectful objectivity, though some devout believers will object to various choices of illustrations, which seem to have been made to attract readers' attention rather than to explain the faiths (e.g., the swastika as a Hindu symbol). Although the topics are well organized, the book is dominated by its striking, full-color photos on every page. Betsy and Giulio Maestro's The Story of Religion (Clarion, 1996) explains the major religions in fewer words but in greater detail. Its color drawings and paintings concentrate on essentials rather than flashiness. For slightly older readers, Mary Pope Osborne's One World, Many Religions (Knopf, 1996) provides considerably more information but covers only the seven largest religions. Ganeri's book will work well with children who need an overview of religions other than their own.?Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6. Although there are several series books that use similar formats in their religion books (lots of color graphics, insets with extra information), this entry in the Your World Explained series is more crisply written and offers wider coverage than most. The book not only devotes several pages to each of the major religions but also gives briefer looks at less widely practiced religions, such as Sikhism, Jainism, the spirit religions of South and North America, Africa, and Australasia, and new religions such as Rastafarianism and Bahaism and the Hare Krishna and New Age movements. A useful, attractive book to enliven the 200 shelves. Ilene Cooper

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair treatment of world religions, December 2, 2000

This review is from: Religions Explained: A Beginner's Guide to World Faiths (Henry Holt Reference Book) (Hardcover)
This Henry Holt reference volume for children includes much of everything you ever wanted to know about world religions, from ancient practices to living faiths through the development of new belief systems, Ganeri takes us on a brightly illustrated journey around the world and through the centuries. Focusing on the major world religions, Ganeri shares the history, practice, and festivals celebrated thousands of years ago and today. Difficult as it is to fit the idea of comparative religion into 69 pages for children, Ganeri has done an admirable job including basic information without crossing the line into controversial areas. She manages to mention the importance of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to Jews and to Muslims, but avoids the bigger political fallout surrounding those beliefs. Ganeri seems to focus Christian information on "high church" beackgrounds, choosing to describe missionary work as that performed by "nuns and monks," and including pictures of robed priests and formal cathedrals to describe how Christians worship. But overall, this is a nice collection of information from a broad background, and the Henry Holt name gives more credence to inclusion in a school library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to world religions, January 21, 2011
This review is from: Religions Explained: A Beginner's Guide to World Faiths (Henry Holt Reference Book) (Hardcover)
As an atheist, I'm always looking for materials that will teach my children about religions without indoctrinating them into a particular faith. This book does exactly does. Any slant it has could be described as secular (dates, for example, are told as BCE - before common era - and CE - common era), but each religion (well, at least the extant ones) is shown a lot of respect. The book covers all the major religions and several minor ones (zoroastrianism, jainism, hare krishnas, etc.). But because of its scope, descriptions of any but the largest monotheistic faiths are very short. The book is very well written, in a language that is perfect for my 3rd grader.

I DID NOT receive this book. I emailed the seller, and he suggested to wait a little more. Almost a month has passed- no book. I would still like to get it.
