Book Description

September 12, 1998

Buddhism is a concise and readable survey of the history of Buddhism from its roots in India to its spread across South and East Asia and its present day manifestation in Europe and America. Focusing particularly on the modern period, it provides a valuable introduction to the different paths of Buddhism—the beliefs and practices—and looks at the ways in which this religion is meeting the challenges of the modern world. Written in an accessible and informative style, and assuming little or no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, this book gives a basic introduction to the faith—its history, beliefs, and practices. Provides valuable pedagogy, including: timeline; maps; glossary; list of sacred days/festivals; suggested reading; pronunciation guide; index; feature boxes focusing on some aspects of the arts; 11 black and white pictures and artworks. Readers interested in learning more about the world's religions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginner!, April 19, 2000

This review is from: Religions of the World Series: Buddhism (Paperback)
This book is an exceptional introduction for the beginner in Buddhism. It covers all the major points in a form that is easily understood. The author clearly has a deep understanding of Buddhism, but has gone to great lengths to write in a style that is accessible to the average person. Highly recommended for those beginning their study of this fascinating religion.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent source of material for the person interested in the religion, June 30, 2008
This review is from: Religions of the World Series: Buddhism (Paperback)
To the Western mind raised around religions where a supreme being is constantly appealed to and expected to intervene favorably in your lives, Eastern religions can appear baffling. The symbolism, images and beliefs seem contradictory to the Judeo-Christian theses. However, there is a lot of similarity between the religions, as all have as their basis a fundamental code of ethics.
Hawkins covers the origin of Buddhism from the time of Gautama, the spread throughout the Asian continent, the major variants and the extent to which it is currently practiced. No short book could possibly cover all aspects of a complex religion, and this book is no exception. However, if you are someone who was raised in a Judeo-Christian culture and are interested in learning the basics of Buddhism, this book is an excellent choice of material.
