The Art of Art Thievery

When Hiram Jacobs is murdered, the responsibility for his internationally renowned security company falls upon his daughter, Desiree. But a container full of stolen paintings screams the ugly truth—that her father was a thief. Option A: Turn the goods over to the law, disgrace her father’s name, destroy their business, put people out of jobs, and embarrass international museums with the fact that they have been displaying clever forgeries. Option B: Surrender the art to the bad guys. But then she becomes an unwilling accomplice to the thieves, and her father’s murderer would walk free. Worse, a death threat warns her not to cooperate with federal agents. Can she trust God to guide her down the right path when no option seems right…let alone safe?

Art stole her heart…

Now can she return the favor?

If Desiree Jacobs knows anything, it’s art. Her father, whose security company is internationally renowned, taught her everything he knew. Most of all, he taught her about honor. Integrity. Faith. So surely God will forgive her for despising the one man determined to destroy her father’s good name?

Special Agent Tony Lucano knows Hiram Jacobs is an art thief. But what he can’t figure out is Desiree. Is she the innocent victim…or a clever accomplice?

Then Hiram is murdered. And along with his company, he leaves Desiree a hidden container full of stolen paintings. But she can’t admit her father was a thief! That would destroy their business, put people out of jobs, and embarrass international museums that have been displaying clever forgeries. No, she must find out why her honest father would turn criminal. And she must return the priceless art to the rightful owners without their knowledge. Even if it means facing down a ring of cutthroat art thieves…or accepting help from the man she most distrusts.

Story Behind the Book

“One night I woke up, my whole body tense, after dreaming that a woman had snuck into a home in the middle of the night to return a genuine painting that had been stolen and replaced by a clever forgery. I knew little about her except that she was an expert at what she did, and if she was caught, disaster would follow. My imagination began to play with that nugget. I love stories where people risk much to do the right thing, and I feel sick whenever I hear of art or antiquities desecrated or stolen. Putting these elements together into a tale of intrigue—with a sassy heroine and an intense hero—came easily. I believe that capturing the imagination with a gripping story makes a most effective vehicle to convey thought-provoking realities.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery with a little comedy and romance, September 10, 2006
This review is from: Reluctant Burglar (To Catch a Thief Series #1) (Paperback)
Jill Elizabeth Nelson's novel, The Reluctant Burglar, is a fast paced, tightly written mystery that will intrigue the reader from the first little bit of trickery to the final disclosure. Desiree Jacobs is a character you will come to love as she uses all her wiles and tricks as a security expert to uncover the truth. The clues lead in directions she doesn't want to go, but her search for truth pulls anyway. Not even able to trust her best friend or her growing feelings for FBI agent Tony, Desiree finds herself in a situation after situation that tests everything she has ever learned. Was her father a thief? Is her best friend actually her worst enemy? Does Tony return her feelings for him? Read about these and other escapades as Desiree doesn't wait on help from authorities, but takes matters in her own hands and almost winds up a victim herself. It's all here, romance, intrigue, comedy, high-stakes thrills, stirring mystery, and fast-moving action. Don't miss it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh, exciting, and fun novel., December 5, 2006
This review is from: Reluctant Burglar (To Catch a Thief Series #1) (Paperback)
Desiree Jacobs is an art thief. She steals rare and valuable paintings for a living--and then returns them. The daughter and protegee of security company guru Hiram Jacobs can do no less. Each successful heist, whether it be from a museum or a private collection, proves the need for the security their company can provide. Hiram has built an international business of loyal clients, and Desiree is fast following in his footsteps. Her father means everything to her. And her greatest goal is to emulate his skills, integrity, and faith.

But when her father is found murdered in his Rome hotel room, Desiree's bubble bursts. Could her father really have been involved in a professional art theft ring? The FBI certainly things so, and now their sites are set on Desiree. Like father, like daughter. Surely they were in it together. How can she convince them of her innocence? And how can she right her father's wrongs without the FBI knowing?

I was compelled to read Reluctant Burglar for its premise. What suspense fan wouldn't salivate when art theft, museum security, FBI investigations, and murder all appear in the same novel? And the art aspects of the book really do steal the show. Not only does Nelson impart interesting facts from the art world, but she actually shows us some of the techniques Desiree uses to remove the paintings rather than glossing over the details.

Desiree Jacobs is a plucky heroine who reminds me of a grown up (and slightly more vulnerable) Nancy Drew. She's independent and adventurous but still shows her human side when doubts surface. And her attraction to special agent Tony Lucano is something she can't fight, as much as she might want to. Admittedly, there were a few times Tony's attraction for his prime suspect strayed from what I would expect from a professional FBI agent, but this is what you'd expect in a romantic suspense novel.

There's never a dull moment in Burglar (thriller readers applaud), but this is definitely a romantic suspense novel. If you're a romance fan and have been looking to branch out, Burglar would be a great selection. Its violence is minimal and for the most part kept "off screen", and there's a nice mix of humorous banter with the more serious plot aspects.

A fresh, exciting, and fun novel, Reluctant Burglar will break into your life and steal your time and sleep. But that's a good thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Grabber That's Not Grubby, September 19, 2006
By
This review is from: Reluctant Burglar (To Catch a Thief Series #1) (Paperback)
Add Jill Elizabth Nelson to your list of favorite mystery authors. Her RELUCTANT BURGLAR sparks your curiosity with the first page, where she introduces a very questionable heroine, and then she seizes you with a hole-free plot that zooms along. Nelson's characters are both easy to believe in and easy to like, though they'll keep on surprising you even after you think you have them figured out. Nelson also delivers a big plus in today's anything-goes world--a fun-to-read book you can recommend without a single caveat about language or values.
