5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be reluctant to try this one!
The Reluctant Princess is an unusual Black Lace book. It reads like a mainstream thriller with unexpectedly strong sex scenes. Princess is on a quest to turn around her bad-girl ways and live the straight life... at least for one year, so she can collect her inheritence. Until then, she is penniless and at the mercy of her new man Joaquin Xavier Lee, a classic warrior...

3.0 out of 5 stars What do you mean reluctant .....
Maybe her name was princess but thats about the only thing that I would find princess like with this young heroine.

Martha is pretty well a skinny, wasted druggie that seems to have maintained her ability to think. She has ties to a wealthy family, and her sister who seems to have all the family money is married to some bigamist kook up in Utah or one of those states...

Princess is on a quest to turn around her bad-girl ways and live the straight life... at least for one year, so she can collect her inheritence. Until then, she is penniless and at the mercy of her new man Joaquin Xavier Lee, a classic warrior type. Their love/hate connection sizzles from their very first interraction... One of the best BL books I've read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warmth for those cold Winter Nights, October 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Reluctant Princess (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was not what I expected. At first, I was surprised at the character having the passions, desires, and problems she did. It opens by making you ask yourself some hard (no pun intended) questions. You get pulled into a different world, one you normally don't expect with a Black Lace Book. I can see how some readers are reluctant to read on, but those of us who have dared to move forward got a real treat! This is the kind of warmth I need for those long winter nights ahead. Can't wait to read more!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fab, Darling ..., January 2, 2004

In this (...) saucy, raunchy debut, Patty Glenn introduces us to a Southern California full of sweaty brazen sunsets, Hollywood dive bars, Palm trees choking in the vibrant, toxic air, filthy street corners, dirty money and even dirtier girls. All good princesses need a Viking God, but it's the bad, naughty girls that have all of the fun.
I really enjoyed the almost cathartic, descriptive grammar Glenn uses; her writing is mildly reminiscent of Ann Rice's erotica, and her story is written exceedingly well.
I recommend that all erotica/Ann Rice/Romantic Novel addicts and fans buy this book !!!!!!!!!!! I will continue to look for her on the shelves and on Amazon.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laughter and unexpected depth, August 30, 2003

The main character, Martha, is very appealing, but also maddening because she's psychologically complex. She lives and thinks and talks like a shallow person, but the further into the book you get, the deeper a person Martha turns out to be. And yet, she can't seem to fall in love with the hero of the book, who is also a very appealing character. The greatest thing about Joaquin is that he can read Martha like a comic book and knows exactly what she needs on all levels. Who doesn't want a hero like that?!

The cult stuff in central Utah is fun (but some of the Mormons will be miffed by it because it's never clear that the cult and the mainstream Mormon church are separate things). The imagery in Hollywood and the L.A. area is great. Patty Glenn is a very fine author, very witty with an elliptical style that I like very much. The way this book is plotted shows genius. It reminds me of the Kathleen Turner-Michael Douglas-Danny DeVito movie, Romancing the Stone. It also harks back to certain Bogie movies, especially The Maltese Falcon. The book also kept making me think of an old, old jazz song sung by the great Ella Fitzgerald, "Treat Me Rough." There's laughter just under the surface all the way through this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars bad girls have all the fun, August 23, 2003
This review is from: The Reluctant Princess (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
A fast paced naughty little read that will keep you on the edge and begging for more. Although not the traditional Black Lace fare, The Reluctant Princess is a tasty treat. This a great effort by this first time writer. I look forward to more.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Kick-Ass Princess RULES!, August 25, 2003
This review is from: The Reluctant Princess (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
Love a story where a bad, bad girl with attitude gets her act together to take control (of the hero AND the story outcome)? Martha does exactly that with her intriguing hero, Joaquin, and tells her Hollywood detective/adventure story with in-your-face style and the sting of leather lacings in her voice. A fine, fun story!

The Princess sports an attitude that makes the reader laugh while detailing her more lusty/nasty struggle to behave. Beautiful visual descriptions from the San Fernando Valley's No Ho District to the small towns of central Utah. Two of the most stubborn characters ever! Oh baby. Oh baby.

She has ties to a wealthy family, and her sister who seems to have all the family money is married to some bigamist kook up in Utah or one of those states where womes seem to really enjoy sharing their men...

She likes her sex rough especially on drugs. qWhen her boyfriend private eye is taken out of the picture she hooks up with his parter who similarily before the middle of the book gets the living daylight beat out of him too and spend the rest of the book in the hospital

If erotica were food I would classify this book as a plain balogna sandwich with no butter or mustard or cheese .... LOL

4.0 out of 5 stars The Reluctant Princess, December 9, 2003

The rather sympathetic description of polygamous cults of boondocks Utah has the ring of true knowledge. I look forward to more explorations of this in Patty Glenn's future books. There is certainly some black lace potential behind those closed doors! Her naughty heroine finally stopped denying her innate morality and was finding true happiness rather than just passing thrills (though happiness can encompass thrills, too!) by the end of the book -- not something expected from a book of this type. I can't believe I read it to the end, but I'm glad I did. The ending was particularly satisfying in the same way as Steve Martin in the movie, "My Blue Heaven."
