5.0 out of 5 stars Romance at its humorous best, March 23, 2002
This review is from: The Reluctant Viscountess (Mass Market Paperback)
To the despair of her parents, the younger Miss Abbot is 'cursed' with intelligence and average looks. When her first season was cut short by measles and she failed to secure an offer from a suitable gentleman, she is taken back for another season in London, where she slowly spends her time wasting away and daydreaming through the glamorous parties she is dragged to. When, on top of that, she refuses several extremely suitable offers, her mother begins to suspect that something is amiss. Lady Abbot can only conclude that her dearest, sweetest, intelligent, but totally without common sense, youngest daughter is in love with the completely unsuitable Visount Caversleigh.

Viscount Caversleigh is knee-deep in trouble with his father after gambling his estate away while drunk. His father demands that he gets settled and marries a respectable young lady and the Viscount decides that Miss Abbot will do.

Jasmine Cresswell is a wonderful writer who has the wonderful knack of you laugh out loud. The characters are very well drawn and the historical details are perfect. The support characters are equally fantastic. In short, this book is a must read for all fans of regency romances.

4.0 out of 5 stars The female of the species is more deadly than the male, January 23, 2001
This review is from: The Reluctant Viscountess (Mass Market Paperback)
The intelligent and well educated Miss Abbott dislikes the shallowness of the many parties that she participates in London, and is discouraged she will ever find a man to love and respect. Unfortunately in this time most ladys had only one season to find a man to marry, and this is her second season, therefore Lord and Lady Abbott decides she must accept the very next suitor, whomever it may be. Miss Abbott decides she will do anything to avoid this.

Viscount Cravensleig's love was taken from him when he was young by his parents and hers, and he vows never to marry as vengance. Unfortunately as he is gambling one night he loses his estate, and the debth is purchased by his fater. He is willing to give the estate back to Cravensleig, but only as a wedding gift on his wedding day.

At the edge of society lures the beutiful french Comtesse de la Ronde. She is a french aritocrate who would do anything to help the french win the war, and stop at nothing to win the heart of Lord Cravensleigh.

A really enjoyable book if one likes romances and intrigues set in historical settings.
