Captivating! --Seattle Times

Product Description

Rarely has an architect caused as much sensation outside of the architecture community as Rem Koolhaas. His outstanding creations such as the Dutch Embassy in Berlin, the Seattle Library and the Casa da Musica concert hall in Porto are working examples of the Dutchman's visionary theories about architecture and urban society. But Koolhaas' work is as much about ideas as it is about constructing buildings; he is equally celebrated as a writer and social commentator. For Koolhaas, what is essential is not to create individual masterpieces, but to provoke and excite through the wide range of his activities.

REM KOOLHAAS: A KIND OF ARCHITECT is an engaging portrait of a visionary man that takes us to the heart of his ideas. Directors Markus Heidingsfelder and Min Tesch have made a visually inventive, thought-provoking portrait of the architect, prompting Rem Koolhaas to state, 'It's the only film about me that I have liked.'

4.0 out of 5 stars REM KOOLHAAS August 9, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Last night I rented the Rem Koolhaas movie off amazon and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Rem Koolhaas is a dutch Architect and writer. I have always been fascinated by his work. I discovered him when I was in architecture school. I was designing a fashion design studio. I read his book about the work he did for Prada to help start generating some ideas.

This movie is told as a cohesive story of the rise of Rem Koolhaas and his architecture. The highlights for me were:

- The influence of film on his architecture
- The back story of all projects
- Spatial Analysis of each building 3/4 of way through movie.
- Rem's attitude and opinion of Chinese clients vs American clients
- His thoughts about about designing for the context of the site.

I started this movie hoping to learn more about the Seattle Library and that was the one Koolhaas project that was spoken about the least.

Rem Koolhaas was the only person speaking english and the rest of the movie is in subtitles. The subtitles move quick so this wouldn't be the best movie to watch while eating ice cream. A milkshake would definitely be a better option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant October 25, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Rem Koolhaas has always been aware of the impotence of graphics as a means of communication, having first worked in film before he turned to architecture. His architecture itself is an elaborate intellectual game and fortunately this film captures that spirit. The graphic style of the film's style evolves as Koolhaas' own style changes, matching the various projects and books he has been involved in through his career. Rather than just documenting his projects, it explains his method, and as an educator in architecture, I often recommend this film as an example to my students. It may not be the right method, or the only one, but this film shows how one architect in particular works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too short February 16, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Not enough of Koolhaas work. Though interesting, too much interview. I liked his philosophy for design. Could have had more background and his earlier work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rem Koolhass kind of movie... December 23, 2011
Format:DVD
To put into a few words this documentary is like putting "S,M,L,XL" into a film... I really enjoyed it. If you're a fan of Rem Koolhass and have read his books you must see this movie!
