Some years before Tyrone was signed, I was introduced by Pandora to one of those songs that pushes your shoulders back with both arms, shuts your eyes for you, and delivers chills followed by addiction. The voice poured unexpectedly from my headphones:
When All Is Said and Done. An artist I'd never heard of, "Tyrone Wells", was the culprit, and his diverse work fuses the the "contemporary folk of Ray LaMontagne with the soul of a D'Angelo unbound by vocal range. Tyrone finds his lyrics and songwriting from an untarnished soul, and watching him perform you can see an energy transform him. It's an experience.
His range oscillates from angelic to thick and tobacco-throated, and, in my view has no equal in this genre. As an audiophile I was instantly HOOKED, and immediately compelled to spend hours pulling together every available song of his. Then, by coincidence, his band came to our small beach hamlet in Santa Barbara!
I absolutely had to meet him, and somehow persuaded both Tyrone and his lovely wife Elina to dinner with a cadre of new Tyrone evangelist friends of mine. Sitting at a long table at Arigato, a 6+ foot, shaved-headed white dude strode in with his beautiful wife Elina in tow. Imposing, as though on sabbatical from a magazine cover, the two couldn't be kinder, more gentle and curious, or less rockstar'sh; instead, we drank sake, traded stories, and had a blast.
Anyhow we immediately became friends, and every now and then him and his band (led by Mark Chippello) visit my girlfriend and I at our home (in Austin now) while on tour. This Wednesday will be for second time this year and we can't wait. Enjoy him before the world gets a hold of him. Though even then, as evidenced by his last sold-out concert where a couple from San Antonio drove up to Austin to see his show, couldn't get in, and when Tyrone heard of their disappointment, he grabbed his guitar, walked straight out back, and personally played Sea Breeze for the two of them! If there's anyone humble enough to not let this go to his head, it's Tyrone. He's as real as they get, and his music has caused me and my friends so much happiness, I hope it does the same for you and yours!
