5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Excellent
I purchased an Akai 27in LCD flatscreen/DVD combo about a week ago and I have been astounded by how good it actually is. The screen clarity is what first caught my attention when I saw it at COSTCO-- yes it is hooked up for HDTV when it is on display and there are warning stickers placed on the shelves to let you know that a regular DVD will not be as good as HDTV...

3.0 out of 5 stars ok tv but nothing special
This tv is convenient because of the built in dvd player but it only has an ok picture. The black levels are poor and become washed out at times. I use it in my personal gym while doing cardio so it's ok for that purpose, but I wouldn't want it for my main tv. The picture just isn't good enough. I'd say the best thing about this tv is the price!

Also, I...

I purchased an Akai 27in LCD flatscreen/DVD combo about a week ago and I have been astounded by how good it actually is. The screen clarity is what first caught my attention when I saw it at COSTCO-- yes it is hooked up for HDTV when it is on display and there are warning stickers placed on the shelves to let you know that a regular DVD will not be as good as HDTV. (This item was not available on Amazon at the time).

I purchased it for use as a computer monitor when I found that a 21 inch monitor I'd just bought really wasn't roomy enough for true side by side viewing of webpages.. I returned it and had to pay a 15% restocking fee but I'm sure glad I did and went straight over to purchase my Akai. I have been having a great time watching all my old DVD's because it brings them to life as if I am watching them for the first time.

One of the most amazing things about this monitor is just how stunning the brights and whites are-- especially when watching a live concert DVD with vivid colors, flashes, and spotlights.
The response rate is excellent and the blacks are very black.

The DVD player is as easy to operate as is possible and works flawlessly. As for durability I cannot say because I have only had it for a week, but while I was waiting in line to purchase it I had a few people brag about other Akai products they have and their excellence.

The speakers are very good but I would only give them 4 stars. I have never come across any flat panel that had truly excellent speakers but VERY GOOD is good enough when you weigh in the compact design and sleek styling.

I've been enjoying my new Akai so much I haven't even hooked it up to my computer yet. I think to myself... How can I get so excited over a little flat panel tv? I need to get out more.

There are so many hundreds of models of LCD flat panel tvs out there and many of them are downright horrible, with muddy screens and blured images. If you are in the market for a flat panel this size. Definently take a look at this one.

Also, I hear the slight buzz people mentioned but it doesn't bother me enough to warrant a return.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT-BEWARE!!, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Remanufactured Akai LCT2701TD 27 Inch LCD TV/DVD Player Combo (Electronics)
We received the Akai 27 inch LCD TV, refurbished and paid $679.00. It was delivered defective with a loud buzzing noise. The product is not refundable & there is no "LIVE" person to speak with from Amazon. We were informed that we had to go through Akai for repair. We have made dozens of phone calls-It has been three weeks and no one has come to repair the TV- Never buy a refurbished TV and never purchase an Akai product. They make promises, will not let us talk to a supervisor or corporate headquarters. Awful!!

I purchased this TV from Costco last month and had to return it. There was such a pronounced buzzing coming from the set. You do get what you pay for! Save your time and money on this set. I even tried hooking it up to external speakers, but the hum wasn't coming from the speakers. Very Annoying!

I've been waiting over a month for customer service on a dead screen. Do not buy Akai. Ask the Better Business Bureau.

--update--

Akai finally found a service center to pick up the TV. The guy was great and was in contact with me the whole time. Unfortunately, Akai took months to get him schematics for the power supply, which wasn't broken. They wouldn't give him anything else. Akai did call Sam's club for us and let us return the TV. STAY AWAY FROM AKAI!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this from Amazon, June 8, 2006
This review is from: Remanufactured Akai LCT2701TD 27 Inch LCD TV/DVD Player Combo (Electronics)
Amazon sold this as new, but it was either used or refurbished. (The packaging was not in new condition.) The TV is good, but there is a constant buzzing noise from the speakers. Can be easily mounted using Peerless mount.

4.0 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good, June 8, 2007
This review is from: Remanufactured Akai LCT2701TD 27 Inch LCD TV/DVD Player Combo (Electronics)
I am cheap and have been holding out for just the right deal. I find it difficult to justify 500.00 to 1,000.00 for a 27" LCD TV. The result is that I have been watching the same tube 19" tv in my bedroom for 15 years!
I found this on line as a reman for 369.00 at (...).
The sound is ok. Two speakers under the screen, not dolby 7.1, but ok for the bed room. The picture is great! I also love having a built in DVD player.

Are there better? I am sure there are, however at this price I could not find any. I have read in other user reviews that there is a static sound that comes up. I have found this occationally on the lower analog channels of comcast cable. I unplug the cable box and tv, plug them back in and the problem goes away. It seems to be channel specific. I had comcast out, however they can't find anything wrong. If I just unplug the tv, the problem stays. I do not think this is a tv problem.
I recomend this tv if:
1-You do not mind factory reconditioned
2-You want a combo tv/dvd
3-You are cheap and refuse to pay the inflated prices.

1.0 out of 5 stars Akai tv's are garbage!, March 9, 2008
This review is from: Remanufactured Akai LCT2701TD 27 Inch LCD TV/DVD Player Combo (Electronics)
I purchased an Akai LCD from Radio Shack, within 3 months the picture would black out - obviously some component overheating. Sent it in for repair under warranty. Two months later, they sent me back a totally different set with scratches all over the case. The remote was a Phillips universal that they had painted black over the name! The set is too large for a specific area that I purchased the original one for.

I emailed Akai 4 times and get only a generic response that says:

"Thank you for your inquiry. Your email will be answered as soon as possible.

If you want to order parts, please call 888-498-7278.
If you want to speak to a representative (customer service, tech support, or to request service), please call 866-278-5900.

Again, thank you for your business."

I contacted customer service and explained what had happened and told them that I wanted my original set back. They said they couldn't do anything about it, they would have to contact Akai to see what they could do. It's been over a week and I have not heard from Akai.

Do yourselves a favor and don't buy their garbage products backed up by NO customer service whatsoever!

5.0 out of 5 stars my new Akai, August 24, 2006
This review is from: Remanufactured Akai LCT2701TD 27 Inch LCD TV/DVD Player Combo (Electronics)
I searched all the local stores and could only find a couple of flat screens with a built in DVD player. It seems to me that more would have that feature because the whole point of a flat screen to me is to save space. I put this out in a florida type room and so there wasnt much free space for a table and coventional tv so I thought, flat screen mounted to the wall would be perfect. Then I thought well heck if I have to get a DVD player it has to go on a stand under the tv and there goes my space savings. So a built in DVD player was the answer. WOW what a perfect choice. Beautiful picture, no floor space taken up and built in DVD player. I love it and highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Power supply WILL go out, April 13, 2010
This review is from: Remanufactured Akai LCT2701TD 27 Inch LCD TV/DVD Player Combo (Electronics)
I have/had three of these. Bought them all at once for displays in the lobbies of my offices.

All three of them have died. All died within six months of each other. Flashing red light indicating the power supply has died. Do not buy this television unless you plan on tossing it in precisely three years. The power supply WILL, without a doubt, fail.
