I bought this laser printer for light home use. I don't need color much and don't want to pay the high ink costs of inkjet printers. Perhaps I got a bad printer, but there's nothing worse than getting a heavy defective product that you just have to bother packaging back up and spending money to return.

The printer LOOKED like new condition, but printed with a horrible grinding and groaning noise. The pages don't come fully out of the printer, so it takes the next page to push the last one...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough, but not perfect, December 6, 2003

This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EHL-1440 Laser Printer (HL-1440) (Office Product)
I bought this laser printer for light home use. I don't need color much and don't want to pay the high ink costs of inkjet printers. The HL-1440 does print VERY CLEARLY and quickly without much noise. This printer is best for text not graphics, as are most laser printers. Installation was very simple.

The printer is very good but has some small problems. 1) The driver is basic and a little glitchy. It sometimes resizes the margins established in MS Word and other documents. I sometimes need to adjust the margins in the driver itself. Can't get the "fit to page" setting to work. But I am always able to print documents correctly after adjustments. 2) Tech support is minimal. Web support is weak. Phone support is difficult to reach. 3) The paper tray is exposed in the rear. This design allows dust to settle on the blank pages. 4) Takes a lot of power when warming-up. Would be best to run it on a different electrical circuit than your PC. 5) Refurbished drum and toner have only 90% life of new. I purchased the refurbished model. Unfortunately the included drum and toner were refurbished also. 6) Needs more memory. The included 2Mb is not enough for maximum resolution. Fortunately additional memory is cheap to buy. I found 32MB on the web for $11 delivered.

Overall, I am happy with the printer. Just disappointed with the small issues because the printer could have been perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good entry level laser printer., November 17, 2004
This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EHL-1440 Laser Printer (HL-1440) (Office Product)
Although sold as a refurb., my unit seemed brand new. I maxed out the memory with a 32 MB module, so graphics as well as text print fine. Works fine with my Macs running OS X at home. Fast and excellent quality output. Prints envelopes easily with hand fed front slot. Some express concerns about separate toner and drum replacement and associated costs, but drum life appears to be fairly long. I am quite satisfied with this unit at two months of home use with a few hundred sheets printed.

Purchased this printer refurbished....a bit hesitant, but everything works fine and there's a full one year warranty.
Printer is a bit deeper than normal due to the paper tray sticking out the back, so it makes a bit larger footprint than some other models.
The first page takes a few moments to get started, but once going the print speed is fine for this level of printer.
Product registration / information / set-up all are easy and seem to be great.
Memory is the only issue...the standard 2MB is fine for text, but if you're going to be printing a lot of black & white pictures or graphics, you would definately need to upgrade the memory. Not really an issue for me, though. It will still print the graphics, just at a lower resolution.
Otherwise, very happy w/ this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's been 1 year, and I still love this printer!, March 19, 2005

This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EHL-1440 Laser Printer (HL-1440) (Office Product)
Purchased mine here last March, and have had no problems with it. Plus, it's 1/2 as expensive today, as when I paid $163.75 for it, just a year ago. Very fast, easy, and uneventful installation. I would buy this model again, without question.

Granted, I don't use mine every day. But sometimes I do print quite a bit at one time, and it's never jammed and I haven't had to replace the toner yet.

If you want a laser printer for light-moderate use... and are on a budget, I'd recommend this one. For the price, you can't go wrong.

Perhaps I got a bad printer, but there's nothing worse than getting a heavy defective product that you just have to bother packaging back up and spending money to return.

The printer LOOKED like new condition, but printed with a horrible grinding and groaning noise. The pages don't come fully out of the printer, so it takes the next page to push the last one out, and the subsequent page order is messed up. If I print multiple pages, I just get a big mess of papers in the bin.

I'm tech savvy and very knowledgable about printers, so it's not like I left the plastic yellow "REMOVE" tag on the toner unit or anything like that. There's just something severely wrong with the unit I received that anybody printing a test page should have noticed.

The included installation disk had nice fancy graphics but froze on my XP computer whenever I attempted to install the actual driver. I eventually had to get to Brothers website to get the driver downloaded.

My final complaint is that removing the drum/toner units, and even the drawer can be quite messy. There's a neon green lubricant splashed in every possible crevice.

Needless to say, this one's going back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Margin problem with Outlook -Brother HL-1435, December 23, 2004
This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EHL-1440 Laser Printer (HL-1440) (Office Product)
I just spent some time also trying to figure out how to get rid of the wide margin problem with a brand new Brother HL-1435 printer and finally figured it out. If you are in Outlook, I sugget not to configure your margins from the global settings that outlook has as you are looking at your list of emails on your inbox, sentItems, etc. To fix the wide margin, protrait, or landscape problem click in a specific email so as to open it up a different window, then from there click on File -> Page Setup -> Memo Style, and from there modified the desired margins and/or orientation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drum is a consumable item, product isn't flawed because you have to replace a drum!, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EHL-1440 Laser Printer (HL-1440) (Office Product)
This printer is great for its price - c'mon, a personal laser printer, and less than $100? Ignore any reviews saying the product is bad or flawed because the drum had to be replaced. Anyone saying this obviously doesn't know that with lasers, the drum has to be replaced just like the toner does only not as often.

Look up the technical specs on almost any standard laser printer and you'll see the expected toner life (often ranging from 2,000-6,000 pages) AND the expected drum life (usually on the order of 20,000 to 100,000 pages, depending on the printer)...

Yes, a drum is expensive, and it may not make sense, but when the printer itself is so cheap, sometimes the drum is more expensive than getting another REFURBISHED printer. This is basic supply and demand (the price of this printer when first released was likely $150 to $200+, more than a ~$100 drum) and because we live in a mass-production "throw-away" society (it's cheaper to buy a new $50 inkjet printer than pay a tech $75 an hour to repair one).

This is not the fastest laser printer on the market but there are many more expensive printers that fail to out-perform this one. This printer has performed flawlessly for the last year and a half. I will continue to recommend this printer to anyone who is looking for a laser printer on a budget.

I would highly recommend this printer. For the price, you can't beat it. Set up was super easy, the pages look great and it's relatively quiet.

My only knock is that there doesn't seem to be a way to do a wireless set-up without using a proprietary Brother adapter or router. (I did some research - enough to be disheartened.) And I so wanted to use an Airport Express, but there doesn't seem to be a way to make it work with this model.

The rebuilt model was cheaper than replacing the drum on my existing Brother laser printer, which lasted for five years of daily use. What a deal.
