A refurbished version of the hugely popular Brother HL-5040, the EHL-5040 laser printer is the ideal printer for your office at work or your office at home. It features a fast print speed at up to 17 ppm, PCL 6 emulation, high-quality output, and excellent performance. It also features 8 MB standard memory, graphics-quality HQ1200 print resolution (up to 2,400 x 600 dpi), a convenient 250-sheet paper tray, and PC and Mac compatibility.

The HL-5040 has a single-sheet manual by-pass tray for card stock, letterhead, and envelopes. It comes with drivers for Windows 95/98/NT4.0/Me/2000/XP as well as for Macintosh USB computers (running OS 8.6 to 9.2, OS X, 10.1, and 10.2.1). To grow with your needs, the printer offers the option of adding memory (136 MB via optional 100-pin DIMM), 10/100 BaseT Ethernet print server network connectivity, and a second, lower paper tray.

This printer received the "Editor's Choice" rating from PC Magazine in the spring of 2004. I purchased one a year ago and have been extremely pleased. I had previously used HP and Epson printers and still have an HP 1200 at the office. I was concerned that a printer that was this inexpensive (I think I paid $150 on sale last year) and that quite frankly seemed a bit flimsier than the HPs would not function well. Since the HP I wanted was around $300, I got this one.

I've been delighted with this. I am using this for text printing, but I do print large PDF files of journal articles. I've been very pleased with how fast this printer handles my JSTOR (journal article) printing. Much faster than my old HP. I'm going to buy a refurbished one for my parents now, rather than go for a more recent model.

Highly recommended.
