5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great
I just got this printer even though I was a little leary after reading some of the bad reviews. I had no probloms however and the set up was quite easy. The drivers for XP are included on an enclosed disk and there is a quick set up guide on a 2 foot square paper fold out that explains the set up step by step. The printout quality is excellent. 1.0 out of 5 stars Warning!!!
That is the last time I am buying any brother printer. I have 5 other printers from inkjet to color laser and photo printer all good but this one is a disaster! The main instalation software is not working with XP! Brother customer service is useless. The print quality was good for few days then I changed the toner (non-brand) and problem started. The print quality...

The copy quality is almost as impressive but you can tell you are looking at a copy when you see the copy print out. With all of the different functions this printer can perform, I don't think you can find a better value out there especially with the $50 rebate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Machine for the $$!!!, November 7, 2005
This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EMFC-6800 Laser Multifunction Printer, Scanner, Copier & Fax (Office Product)
This machine has performed well for me for the 6 months I have used it. So far I have only had to replace 1 toner vs. about 3-4 ink cartridges I would have for my old ink jet MFC. Although I paid much more than the price currently offered, I would do it again. It has saved me money over my old ink jet machine. All functions worked well, fax, copy, scan and fairly fast printing. I did need some help setting it up, but the Brother customer service team was very helpfull and got me up and running in no time. I am purchasing antoher one for my nephew that is currently in college and expect him to be very happy with the machine.

That is the last time I am buying any brother printer. I have 5 other printers from inkjet to color laser and photo printer all good but this one is a disaster! The main instalation software is not working with XP! Brother customer service is useless. The print quality was good for few days then I changed the toner (non-brand) and problem started. The print quality became dark and like old copy machines! I tried several different toners but still print quality is bad. Its speed is very slow, it takes 10-15 seconds to start the job. The mechanics of this printer is another pain. If you want to do manual duplex printing it takes all your printed paper at once and lose the function.
Fax is good. (The only + but I still don't know what quality does the receiver person get there.). Document feeder is good.
The scan function takes for eeeveeer! Tooo slow!
I have to go back to my other printers! Do not experience mine!

Printer was everything it presents itself to be. Installed quickly - all functions. Worth the price. Accepts many differenet types and weights of paper. I'm showing my age but I remember spending REAL money to get a printer of this quality!

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent flatbed multifunction with a few caveats, December 18, 2005

The MFC 6800 is a good value and a good print/scan/copy/fax device for medium duty in a small office or home. There are three issues, the first of which is not a factor for most people.

(1) The printer does not include an emulation capability that allows it to print from DOS. If you want to print from the command line within a Windows DOS box or from an ancient DOS program, you can't. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's not an issue you should worry about.

(2) A bigger problem: The bundled scanning software does not always install easily, and if the installation fails (which is 50/50 with Windows XP) you have to go through a big rigamarole to uninstall it -- go to the Brother website for details. This is an ongoing pain with bundled software supplied by Brother -- had the same problem with an MFC 8820.

(3) The bundled version of ScanSoft scanning and OCR software is a "limited" or crippled version of ScanSoft's PaperPort 8 scanning and OCR software. It does not save in Adobe PDF format, so for any sort of regular scanning you'll want to upgrade to the latest full-blown version of PaperPort (ver. 10? 11?), which adds cost. Selling a crippled version is a typical way manufacurers give you bundled software relatively cheaply, but then you pay the price later.

But: Once the software (just the bundled version, or the full version of ScanSoft) is installed, this is a very good, practical laser multi-function device. Unless you want color, a laser is a lot more economical and quicker than ink jet. And this unit does just about everything you could want a combo device to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Multifunction Laser for the Price!, March 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EMFC-6800 Laser Multifunction Printer, Scanner, Copier & Fax (Office Product)
It does everything we need for an office workhorse. The scanner works great and is compatible with the software we use, The laser printing is great too.
One of our special software packages, that only has HP support, could not print to it. The Ink is VERY cheap but when the time comes to change the Drum we may as well by another refurbished unit.
Again for the price, of the refurbished unit, we could not beat it!

I had to reship the refurbished machine back to Amazon the first time since it broke down in 2 weeks. I got a replacement that seens to be working for the printing and faxing function. However it is having trouble receiving faxes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unhappy with this item, January 11, 2007
By
This review is from: Remanufactured Brother EMFC-6800 Laser Multifunction Printer, Scanner, Copier & Fax (Office Product)
1) Awesomely cumbersome software and operation, 2) poor quality copies with one edge always dark (new drum & cartridge did not fix this), 3) no envelope tray, 4) scans of photos come out distorted, 5) poor quality instructions and troubleshooting, 6) expensive drum replacement. Take my advice, buy something else.
