Engineered to satisfy the audio and video needs of gamers everywhere, the remanufactured Compaq X GX5050 gaming PC pushes users' imaginations to the limit, with best-in-class PC components and leading-edge performance. The unit starts with such revved-up internals as an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor with 512 MB of PC3200 RAM, an nVidia GeForce FX5700 graphics card with 256 MB video memory, and a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS audio card--which combine to deliver a powerful, immersive gaming experience for such system hogs as Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. HP knows its audience, however, which is why it also made the GX5050 incredibly easy to customize, with a tool-free case design that opens easily via the side-panel thumbscrews, a removable motherboard tray, and clean wiring. Should the GeForce FX5700 graphics card prove a little too timid for your taste, you can always stack the deck with a more powerful version.

The GX5050 is also striking to look at, with a full-size aluminum-clad tower that stands 18 inches tall. And whether you're at home or at a LAN gaming party, the red illumination on the front chassis and the glowing fan in the back set the tone for a competitive gaming experience. I purchased this system new about a year ago and it has performed well. You could definitely use it out of the box for all but the most graphics-intense games like Half-Life 2, FEAR, etc. The case is great and I like the card reader in front and the firewire and USB ports on the top.

Personally I upgraded the memory to 1gig, replaced the video card with a GeForce 6600 GT and added a few more hard drives. Now I can play most games with the maximum video settings.

The biggest complaint I have with this system is that it is LOUD. I have tried to use the AMD utilities to slow the CPU fan down but ever time I load them it causes a ton of problems. I think this is due to Compaq using their own BIOS variant.

UPDATE 8/7/2007:
I was finally able to find a program online that would update the bios with a standard (non-Campaq) version which has made updating drivers and the bios easier. I also have upgraded the processor to an AMD 64 X2 4400, increased the memory to 2 Gigs and installed an ATI X1950 Pro AGP card. They system is pretty much maxed out but it was nice to only spend a couple hundred dollars and have a pretty up to date and fast rig. The 939 and AGP platform is now dead but I should be able to use this for the next couple years.

This machine would be great for a gamer platform and here's why. I built a similar game system using an Intel 2.8ghz P4 for more than $1500 with this case(Coolermaster),sound card and a 120gb harddrive. The case does not come with a powersupply so I had to buy one. Anyway the case, Powersupply, motherboard, sound card, 120gb harddrive, keyboard and mouse alone cost $779. Adding the 256mb video card, 1 gig of memory, DVD burner, modem and card reader was an additional $800 for a total of almost $1600 without the operating system Xp home which was $100 more. This system has XP professional preloaded. If this system had been available at the time I built mine I would have gone for it and saved about $800 a little bit less if I doubled the ram from 512 to 1 gig. In comparison to what mine cost to build and the price of this one I think it's an excellent value. By the way the light on my case is blue this one is red.

I was most disappointed with this item and returned it for a refund. The unit arrived in what appeared to be good condition, but when I set it up it did not have video. I tried two different monitors but still nothing. I called HP Compaq tech support but they were no help. They tried to tell me that I had no warranty and that the problem was with my monitor. I felt that I had no choice but to seek a refund and will never buy one of their products again. I do appreciate Amazon.com's policy of customer satisfaction and am grateful for their help in resolving this issue. I received a full refund including shipping. I would not let this incident stop me from buying from them again.

I love this case. The system comes with a solid group of components and with a couple minor upgrades you can have a real fast system for under $1000. Just upgrade the video card and set up a Raid 0 array for the hard drive and this system screams. There are a couple things to watch out for. While it does have a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard the bios is not upgradeable from MSI. I have a problem that seems pretty common with this motherboard and I believe has been solved by a bios upgrade but you can't upgrade the bios so you are stuck... The system won't boot if you have a USB 2.0 hub attached so you have to unplug the hub in order to boot. Kind of a problem since it is my monitor that is the hub and my printer and other components are plugged into that. I have tried other hubs and had the same problem. Also, the cpu fan is very loud, so you will need to run MSI CoreCenter to slow down the fan or buy a more quiet fan.

The system is a great deal for those with a good fast AGP video card that don't want to upgrade to a PCI Express motherboard system.

When I got the computer, it did not boot up. Tech Support was no help. My best guess is that the hard drive was fried. Returned it to Amazon for a refund.
