Primarily designed as a digital music player but also capable of storing data, the RCA Lyra RD1028 is a great choice for travelers, joggers, and a host of other on-the-go music fans. Audio-wise, the Lyra's 128 MB of flash memory stores both MP3 and WMA files, in addition to supporting secure downloads from WMA-compliant DRM services. Listeners will enjoy access to up to four hours of WMA music or 128 songs encoded at 64 kbps--enough for all but the longest workout. Navigation is simple thanks to the included MusicMatch Jukebox software, which also offers such functions as Auto DJ (creates precise playlists based on your sorting preferences) and the ability to export MP3 files to WAV format. And because there are no moving parts, the Lyra's music playback simply doesn't skip.
Listening to music is only part of the fun, however. The Lyra also stores data files, such as digital photos, PowerPoint presentations, text documents, and more. The data storage in effect turns the Lyra into a mini flash drive, making it a great companion for anyone who needs to transport small data files from one location to another without wasting a CD-R or hauling along a laptop. It also serves as a nice overflow device in a pinch, such as when needing to free up space on a digital camera.
The Lyra sports a multi-line alphanumeric display, which lists the artist name, song title, and elapsed time, among other details. The display makes it easy to select songs, view other selections, adjust the volume, check the battery level, and more. And should four hours of music prove insufficient, listeners can load additional songs onto SD/MMC cards and insert them into the Lyra's expansion slot. The amount of music the Lyra can play is restricted only by the number of memory cards you own.
The Lyra is compatible with PCs running Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, or XP or Macs running OS X 10.1.5 or higher. To transfer music, simply run a USB cord (included) from the Lyra to a PC (the Lyra supports USB 2.0). Additional features include five DSP modes (flat, bass, pop, rock, and jazz); a key lock; and a full accessory kit with clip-on headphones and a sports armband.
The Lyra, which runs for around 20 hours on a single AAA battery (included), measures 2.36 by 1.9 by 0.6 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 30-day manufacturer's warranty.
What's in the Box

I purchased this as a 'refurb' and right away had trouble using SD memory cards with it. The instructions don't mention it but if you format the card NTFS (probably your computer's default setting) you'll get inconsistant operation...sometimes the Lyra reads the card, other times not. By formatting the card FAT32, It'll work fine every time. Battery life acceptable, good sound with included headphones. I use mine in the car with a Belkin FM transmitter. People who call them defective are probably experiencing the format issue.

junk, just junk,

My husband bought one of these and really liked it, so I bought on for myself and my 15 year old daughter after he had his for about 5 months. His battery door broke soon after and had to be held together with a rubberband. After 2 months of use mine seems to have a short where the headphones plug in. My daughter also received an ipod as a gift so she gave me hers and it had the same problem with the headphone plug as mine did only hours out of the packaging. The player does sound great when it works, the last guy must have had better luck than I did. I also paid a lot more than he did, $70 for the first and $65 for the second two. I will not buy another RCA MP3 player.
