1.0 out of 5 stars junk, just junk
My husband bought one of these and really liked it, so I bought on for myself and my 15 year old daughter after he had his for about 5 months. His battery door broke soon after and had to be held together with a rubberband. After 2 months of use mine seems to have a short where the headphones plug in. My daughter also received an ipod as a gift so she gave me hers and it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value...but incomplete instructions...., November 10, 2006

I purchased this as a 'refurb' and right away had trouble using SD memory cards with it. The instructions don't mention it but if you format the card NTFS (probably your computer's default setting) you'll get inconsistant operation...sometimes the Lyra reads the card, other times not. By formatting the card FAT32, It'll work fine every time. Battery life acceptable, good sound with included headphones. I use mine in the car with a Belkin FM transmitter. People who call them defective are probably experiencing the format issue.

My daughter also received an ipod as a gift so she gave me hers and it had the same problem with the headphone plug as mine did only hours out of the packaging. The player does sound great when it works, the last guy must have had better luck than I did. I also paid a lot more than he did, $70 for the first and $65 for the second two. I will not buy another RCA MP3 player.

It's a great product for the price. Sure it can't hold your whole collection of albums at once, and the controls aren't as user friendly as an ipod, but if you just want to listen to some music that doesn't skip when you jog, and is easy to carry, this mp3 player is a bargain. I bought a few extra memory cards and labeled them so I know what is on them (125 songs each). I can have a whole library of SD cards. It's easy to change cards and I can even save one for moving computer files around.

We have 2 of these players, and one works very well, and one works just okay. So I split the difference with my star rating.

My son's player works pretty well most of the time, but sometimes for no reason, it will skip around through the songs (meaning move on to another song before it's finished playing one). Also, it sometimes freezes up and we have to pull the batteries out to let it reset. It only does this occasionally, so it's not such a big deal, but it's frustrating, since the player is still relatively new (we purchased it 6 months ago). The button lock switch jammed within a few weeks of buying it, but that's okay, because it's strange anyway. It only locks the buttons after you begin using it. I was hoping it would keep the player from turning on when not in use to save on batteries, but it just starts playing and then won't let you turn it off until you unlock the keys. Luckily, the switch jammed in the "off" position.

My player has had none of these issues, and has played flawlessly. I guess that's what happens when you buy re-manufactured items, sometimes they're still not perfect. I get excellent sound quality, and LOVE that it's expandable. I got an inexpensive SD card and have doubled the capacity of my player. I wish more mp3 players had this capability. It's the main reason we chose this one for our son's birthday.

Overall, I think it's worth every penny we paid for it re-manufactured, but I can see how people might have been disappointed when it was new and more expensive. If you can get one cheap, go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars going strong after a year of heavy use, March 17, 2007

This is the player I bought for exercise and when painting or doing heavy yardwork and it's been more reliable than more famous names at much higher prices. Liked it so much I bought 3 more, 1 as a spare and 2 for gifts. Much more reliable than the iPod, only drawback is that batteries get expensive with heavy use.
