Don't buy the remanufactured unit,
By
This review is from: Remanufactured Magellan RoadMate 700 20 GB Vehicle GPS Navigation System with Windshield Mount (Office Product)
I received a defective unit. Think this was odd, wrong! :-(
The sound did not work, something that you can tell as soon as you turn it on! The plant who did the refurb would know this if they tested the unit before they put in the box. (There are built in diagnostics, you could just try those before you put it in the box and ship it as "Like New Condition") After over 2 hours on hold, Magellan quickly confirmed that the product was indeed defective and that their remanufactured units are often shipped with operational defects. The description "remanufactured to like new condition" is not true for these units. Oddly the support tech confirmed that the over $600 price was reasonable for these remanufactured units. Also the 90 day warranty period means that you will get only 2 tries to ship the unit back and try to get a working unit. They said that they would take 4-6 weeks for an exchange, and that it would not re-start the 90 day warranty. They offer a 1 year warranty for an additional $ 130, but the new one is only $200 more and has the latest maps and software in it, why would you buy remanufactured? I do believe the Roadmate is a good product, but remanufactured is not OK., and their support and warranty for Remanufactured are intended to keep you from buying them. It all seems rather unethical to me.

I ordered the refurb model to save the $100 from the new...it was not worth it.
The model showed up SHOWING signs of it's used condition, and of course; the sound didnt work. I boxed it back up and shipped it back the very same day. I went to another website and ordered the new one. [...]

Stay Away,

Dealing with Magellan customer support was perhaps the worst customer support experience I have ever had. Ever. Not only were they unknowledgeable about their product, but a 3 day old unit with a problem was not covered by warranty. There was a $45 fee just to send it in, and then they would let me know how much the actual repair would be.
I have owned 3 Garmin units and I am about to buy a fourth. Stay away from this lousy company and their messed up products.

I have an installed GPS product in one car and we purchased this unit for other vehicles we own. I have found the Roadmate 700 to be every bit as accurate as my installed product at roughly 1/3 the price. And it gives verbal directions. I chose this model because of the large internal storage than allows all US maps to be maintained in the unit.
The only possible downside to consider is that it must be suspended from your windshield with a mounting adapter (provided), and plugged into a cigarette lighter outlet for power, which some may consider unsightly. If you're looking for a GPS system, I'd highly recommend yuou consider this one.

New Model arriving,

Although the 760 came out mid-August 2005, the differences between the 700 and 760 is minimal. The customer service representative informed me that it is better to purchase the 700 model and later purchase the upgrade (3CDs & 1 DVD & approx 3 hours to download)in Dec/Jan. The upgrades will allow you all the same capabilities as the Roadmate 760 for a price of $100. Since the new model came out, the price for the RoadMate 700 has dropped signficantly.

Bad service support for Magellan RoadMate,

Do not trust Magellan Customer support, they do not have data access and do not care about Magellan reputation.
I used Magellan RoadMate 700 for one day before smoke came out of the unit and it stopped working. Factory no longer has RoadMate 700 in stock for replacements, and technician promised me a new cradle within 5 days. I called after a week, 1st rep. said unit was not shipped and will be shipped immediately, I called 2nd time and another rep. said that unit was shipped 3 days ago and gave me a tracking number not for my package, I called 3rd time and another rep. said that they do not have part, that they will have it in a week and that it will take them another week to ship it to me. After 7 days of being a proud owner of Magellan 700 I shipped it back to the company that I bought it from and expecting a replacement for the entire unit now.

Hardware Failure (Loss of Sound),
By FrontPage (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews What has followed since has been anything but inspirational, in my opinion, about the unit I purchased new. I recently updated to map 4.26, but then found that a new map might be available within the next month. Any chance of gettin g my money back? No. And now, my unit has no sound. The thing works but there's no voice prompts. It started having some problems and then the sound all but quit. It's not the speakers but something I understand, with the soldering. I now discover that there have been a number of reports detailing the same kind of hardware failure. I spent $1,000 for this unit. I have a DVD player that costs l;ess than a hundred bucks and it doesn't have a soldering problem. I still have VHS players.... my father has electronics gear from the 1980s that doesn't have any problem like this. In my opinion, this is something that must stem from shoddy workmanship. In no way is this normal wear and tear. The life of this unit should not be having its last legs at this time. Any positive reviews on how the unit operates in going from point A to point B are moot when you have spent this kind of money on a unit that now has no sound. Now, I'm having problems where the 700 simply cuts off. I'll be driving to a location and the slightest bump may cause the unit to shut off. The cord is plugged into the lighter, and still glows green to show power. Maybe its the plug into the unit, or maybe the clip that attaches to the back has loosened. Whatever it is, the unit has failed miserably. If you still decide to purchase it, I suggest you get some kind of extended warranty that will replace with another new unit.

I am terrible with direction. I was embarrassed and never admitted my problem. I would not drive to a new location when it was dark outside. It is a handicap. Life is getting more complex as my ambition grows. I saw a friend invested in one of the Magellan 700 device and he speaks highly of the product. Therefore, I plunged in and bought a remanufactured Magellan 700 which is about half the original price. It has been a month alredy and I still love it. It is very user friendly. It works well for me even though it is bulky with a wire hanging around, a very few places are not registered, and it also leaves a lot of the suction cup imprints on my window; but it has improved the quality of my life. I strongly recommend getting one if you are poor with direction and your car doesn't have a GPS.

Remanufactured Units Maybe Defective,
This review is from: Remanufactured Magellan RoadMate 700 20 GB Vehicle GPS Navigation System with Windshield Mount (Office Product)
The remanufactured unit that I brought had the following problems:
1. Overheated after more than 2 hours of use and then locked-up. 2. Could not adjust volume. 3. Did not give verbal instructions until almost too late to react. 4. Unit fell off mounting bracket when auto when over bumps. |
