Why wait? Panasonic's high-tech remanufactured DMR-ES10S DVD recorder has everything you need to archive your old VHS and camcorder tapes while taking over any lingering TV-related duties from your VCR. Plus, the recorder can serve as a home-theater-caliber DVD player to boot. The unit records to your choice of DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, or rewritable DVD-RW formats. For playback, it'll handle the aforementioned discs in addition to DVD+RWs, DVD-Audio discs (high-resolution 2-channel only), video CDs, MP3-CDs, and recordable CDs brimming with your cherished JPEG digital photos. DVD-Audio media offer super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound and provides unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.

The DMR-ES10S's virtual multi-encode system enables LP recording with the same 500 lines of horizontal resolution as the deck uses to encode in the higher-quality SP and XP modes. This is twice the 250 lines of resolution used in conventional long play recording, letting you store four hours of full-resolution material on a standard 4.7 GB recordable DVD.

Adding to the DMR-ES10S's value are functions like Time Slip and Chasing Playback. Time Slip lets viewers simultaneously record a program, such as this week's episode of a favorite show, while watching last week's episode on the same disc. Chasing Playback, meanwhile, lets you start watching a program from the beginning even when the recording is still in progress. It's the perfect feature for viewers who arrive home a little earlier than expected and don't want to wait until recording concludes before jumping into the meat of the program.

The DMR-ES10S uses a 12-bit video analog-to-digital converter to provide four times the number of possible color gradation (shades) offered by 10-bit converters. This preserves your source images with more detail, more definition, and more beauty. Other enhancements include Panasonic's real-time variable bit rate control, integrated noise reduction (NR), and visibility modulation technology.

The DMR-ES10S is also a progressive-scan DVD player for use with both standard- and high-definition or HD-ready TVs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Finally, Panasonic's Direct Navigator simplifies the process of previewing recorded programs, letting you access recorded material from an onscreen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels, and titles. The DMR-ES10S also offers a feature called high-speed quick start. The unit is ready to record just one second after you switch it on, easing your mind on those occasions when you forget (or almost forget) that an important program is airing.

Additional features include an optical digital output for enjoying Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, a two-channel stereo recording mode (Dolby Digital AC-3), bilingual recording on DVD-RAM discs, and a host of front and rear connectors, including front composite and S-video inputs and rear component, S-video, and composite outputs. The DVD recorder measures 16.94 by 2.5 by 13.31 inches (W x H x D) and carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible unit, worse customer service!!!, September 27, 2007
This review is from: Remanufactured Panasonic DMR-ES10S DIGA Series DVD Recorder (Silver) (Electronics)
My GOD! I had faith in Panasonic and have never had a problem until now. I bought this less than 2 years ago and suddenly it stopped working for no reason at all. It will not power on at all now. Check out this bug, it is all over the internet, just punch in the model number DMR-ES10 and something like won't power on, etc... it gets worse. I called Panasonic "customer service". If you consider being rushed through the call, repeatedly having questions unanswered then LITERALLY being hung up on customer service, then I guess that's Panasonic's benchmark for service. I was told to mail it in, wait 2 or 3 weeks, then I will receive a call letting me know IF it can be fixed. If so, I will then get the cost. Are you kidding me. If this is a widely known issue, shouldn't they be taking the hit, fixing and shipping it for free and laying out the red carpet? Oh, to add insult, I've been recording one of my favorite shows for about 7 episodes, but I never got a chance to finalize the disc, so I basically wasted weeks recording something that won't play in anyone else's DVD player (no power, no chance to finalize the disc) and finally I have a rented DVD in the player now from Blockbuster that I can't get out. In 3 weeks, it will be extremely late, who's going to pay the late fees? Me of course. As I write this, I STILL don't know what I'm going to do. I don't know what else to say except - Never again Panasonic!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Panasonic DMR-ES10S DVD Recorder D.O.A., March 3, 2006

The machine arrived rather loosely packed. I could never get it to display the setup menu on the TV, nor could I get it to simply play an existing DVD. I waited on hold for over an hour on Panasonic's tech support line and gave up waiting for someone to talk to me. I've returned the unit to Amazon.com. At least all I lost was the return shipping costs. Since remanufactured means something went wrong with it the first time, you'd think I would have known better. You really do get what you pay for...
