Amazon.com Reviews

Philips' widescreen, 16:9 aspect-ratio 23PF8946A TFT LCD television brings you 23 diagonal inches of PC convenience and home-theater style. Perfect for use just about anywhere--living rooms, dens, offices, bedrooms, kitchens, dorms, you name it--the TV offers high brightness (450 cd/m2) and high contrast (500:1), as well as an integrated TV tuner for cable or broadcast reception of all your favorite programs.

This is an EDTV display, which means it's a step closer to high-definition or HDTV than standard TVs. When used with a progressive-scan DVD player (or 480p-output DTV set-top box) you'll get seamless, razor-sharp images from your favorite movies and concert videos.

LCD technology allows screens to be thinner and televisions to be lighter and more energy-efficient than ever before. The result is television that not only fits on a wall, but fits in places conventional televisions cannot. The 23PF8946A's comes outfitted with Digital Crystal Clear III technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast, green/blue stretch, and a 3-line digital comb filter. The comb filter removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

A feature called Active Control continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction. Auto Picture lets you change--at the touch of a button--the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, including sports, movies, multimedia (games), or weak signals.

Auto Sound allows you to select from 3 factory-set controls and a personal control that you set according to your preferences. Use the factory-set controls (voice, music, and theatre) to enhance appropriate programs. Virtual Dolby surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers.

Inputs include 1 component-video, 1 S-video, and 2 composite-video connections, as well as a VGA computer input, which accepts signals up to WXGA (1,280 x 768, from 60 to 75 Hz). Side-panel AV inputs accommodate a camcorder, gaming device, or VCR hookup, and a headphone output (minijack .125-inch) lets you listen in private.

What's in the Box
TV, stand, remote control, remote batteries, and a user's manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Experience With Factory Reconditioned, February 11, 2007
This review is from: Remanufactured Philips 23PF8946A 23" Widescreen LCD TV (Electronics)
I bought a reconditioned Philips 17" LCD HD TV (17PF8945/37) in Dec. 2004 and have had great luck with it. I have it in our kitchen and it's used every day for at least 4 hours at a time. It was like new, not a scratch, knick, or dent when I recieved it....the remote was new. It was packaged in that plastic wrapped foam stuff molded into the box in a top and bottom piece....very well packed in my opinion. The instructions were a little weak (printed very light with a staple in the corner)and I thought that was because it was a re-con unit, but when I went online, they were the same...that's the reason for the 4 star rating instead of 5. At the time I ordered it, I saved over $200 from a brand new unit! I got a 90 day warranty and the only difference to a new one was a sticker in the back saying it was a reconditioned unit. I'm not sure I would agree with the first person that posted their opinion as a "stay away".....I check with the Philips site every once and in a while to see what they have in this catagory, I will buy from Philips Re-con again for sure, I'm shopping for a 23" model now!........PS, the sound quality on this Model/Series of TVs is awesome, better that my 42" Sony TV!...and another weird thing is the HD input into the TV is VGA, so I had to get a Component to VGA cable, so check that out if buying a Philips TV....that's where I had the issue with the weak directions, it was hard to read!! But once was all set and done, the picture is very crisp and clear....and we have 3 other HD TVs in our house.

1.0 out of 5 stars Failed to work "out of the box", February 23, 2006

I thought that buying a re-manufactured product would not only save some money, but that it would also yield a product that was in working order when it arrived. I was wrong and I would advise anyone to steer clear of Phillips re-manufactured products. I have not had similar problems with our factory reconditioned products from other companies (Sharp TV's and Dell computers to name two of them). Amazon was good about picking up the return and their refund was prompt.
