The RCA DRC-8040N single-disc DVD recorder makes it a snap to record your favorite TV programs or dub footage from a camcorder directly to disc. The unit records onto DVD+R/RW discs--up to 4.7 GB of data--and can play DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, and MP3-CD formats. In addition, if offers six recording modes, ranging from one hour to eight hours, so you can pack multiple programs onto a single disc if you're willing to endure a dip in video quality. And thanks to the built-in NTSC-standard 181-channel tuner, you can record as much programming as you want without hooking up to a TV.
Picture-wise, the DRC-8040N offers progressive scan output, which eliminates the scan lines on a video image to produce a cleaner, sharper picture than standard interlaced formats. The device also comes with a Time Base Connector that helps reduce digital noise, eliminates picture jitters from VHS-dubbed recordings, and restores lost vertical and horizontal sync and color burst signals during the tape-to-disc copying process. The end result in both instances is a high-quality, crisp picture that looks great on HD-ready TVs and monitors.
Time-restricted viewers will dig the SmartRecord feature, which adjusts the recording mode based on the available disc space. Want to record an extra-long program? SmartRecord will select the extra-long option, which won't look quite as crisp but will capture the entire show. On the other hand, if the show you want to record is only an hour long, SmartRecord will select a shorter, higher-quality mode.
Once the show is on disc, you can access up to 400 previous recordings via the Disc Library, making it easy to navigate from Firefly to Deadwood. And watching the shows is more pleasurable than ever thanks to the 30-second commercial skip option. Additional features include a selectable aspect ratio (4:3, 16:9, and letterbox), a JPEG photo viewer, and such playback extras as multi-angle playback and picture zoom.
Viewers are set from an audio perspective thanks to the optical digital Dolby Digital and DTS output and the SRS TruSurround virtual surround sound function. Other connections include one component video output, one S-video output and two inputs, one composite video outputs and two inputs, and one analog audio output and two inputs.
The DRC-8040N measures 14.2 by 2.7 by 10.6 inches (W x H x D) and carries a 30-day manufacturer's warranty.

This player was very difficult to understand. It isn't for someone who wouldn't be able to set the time on a VCR. I returned it.

Unit didn't work from day one out of the box. Unit froze in "hello" mode.Complete resets didn't fix the problem. On a positive note, Amazon made it right with a full refund.

I spent considerable time installing this unit in my system..After several frustrating hours..trying to unlock the disc slot I discovered that the unit would not open.. Sent the unit back using the very efficient return system prpovidedby Amazon. Did NOT replace the unit
