This review is from: Remanufactured Rio Nitrus 1.5 GB MP3 Player (Electronics)
I also own a Creative MuVo 128M and an RCA Lyra 20G. I bought the RIO Nitrus for a friend's birthday and thought it would be a friendly gesture to load an album or two into it.
What a surprise! The software that came with the RIO Nitrus auto-detected music on my computer and presented me with a list. I selected a few albums, pressed one button and the songs flew over the USB2.0 connection. Building playlists was easy. The ID3 tags are available to the software so it was easy to set up playlists for individual albums or to play favorite songs. Another click of the button and the playlist transferred over to the device. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use. The monochrome LCD display is easy to read and it's backlit. The sound is great, though I admit I used Bose headphones rather than the silly little earwigs that came with the unit. I didn't find the buttons on this unit to be any flimsier than the buttons on my other mp3 players, but I don't intend to ham-hand the unit so it's not an issue. If you can, get the refurbished unit. It looks just fine to me and costs a good deal less.

This player has several things that annoy, the primary being that it cannot be used as a 'mass storage device'. This means you have to use either the included software, or windows media player, to transfer files. If you can get past that, it works just fine. The buttons are weird, and difficult to press, and the battery life is average. Also, if you want to move stuff from the player to your computer, it takes _ages_. The link is in some way downgraded for uploads, as near as I can work out. All that said, for less than $100 it's not the worst option - 1.5 gigs is a lot of music!

I bought this player last summer before going away for 6 weeks where I had no computer access. Not only did it work wonderfully the entire 6 weeks but the space allowed me to load enough music so I never got too bored with any one album. When I first bought the player I did have a problem that the hard drive crashed but they were very helpful in replacing my product. The only other problem I have found is that the lock button became loosened after a year of use. The battery life is also perfect it lasts about 10 hours and takes about 2 hours to fully charge. Overall I love my rio.

I ordered the refurbed Nitrus from Amazon. So far so good, everything arrived like it was new. Free shipping from UPS, I got it in exactly 5 days after ordering it. I charged the unit for 5 hours, and loaded 1.47GB worth of MP3's as it was charging. Mine came with a silver-colored stick button instead of the red one pictured on the ads. I wonder if that means it is a refurbished unit? The Rio-ware CD works really well with XP SP2 and USB2 port the transfer speed is great - 4 songs at about 4 MB each take about 7 seconds. My unit arrived with firmware ver 1.23, so no need to flash it. So far, sounds great, had to adjust the contrast since it arrived with the display almost transparent, hard to navigate until I adjusted it. Using other headphones now, have not tried out the ones that came with it. You can hear minimal clicking of the HD and slight vibration, so you remember that it is not a flash-based player. I am giving this to my girlfriend anyways to replace her Dell DJ with a bad HD. So far (12 hours) it is flawless, arrived with no scratches or flaws. Would recommend. Not giving 5 stars since the 90-day warranty should have been 180 day instead. Buttons are rather smallish, but click well. Sort menu for play is querky for navigating the menu. Would have been even better if an arm band were included.

Hey, at $80 the remanufactured Nitrus was a steal. I love just about everything except the headphone winding reel. It has a clip for attaching to your clothing, but it falls to about the middle of my chest. It's just an added weight on the cord. After I took it off, I was very happy with the Nitrus.

This is a great player, no major problems at all. Super easy to use, seems pretty durable too.
I do have the little black-blob type thing on the screen though, that and the easily scratchable surface are about my only complaints. This is deffinatly a good first mp3 player, or one to buy if you're going somewhere and don't want to risk your iPod being stolen. The price is hard to beat too, you can find them $80 on auction sites and such. Josh

I bought this item and works fine except that you can only load a certain amount of songs and it freezes up. I guess that what I get for a refurbished unit. next time I am buying a new one. But over all it is a great mp3 player small and compact light weight and I love the feature that you can leave the back light on all the time.

I owned this player for about a month before returning it to the store and getting an iPod instead. I wasn't disappointed with the player at all - infact, it was great. I was just very annoyed with a 90-day warranty - and I had bought this product new - not refurbished or factory renewed or any crap of that sort. The headsets were Sennheiser but quite flimsy. I preferred my Sony Street Style headphones.
The Rio Taxi software was good and the USB interface was snap as well. I have owned quite a few MP3 players - Archos, iRiver, Apple and Sony - I would rate the Rio higher than iPod on battery life - the sound quality was about the same but the iPod interface was much better - this is not to say the Nitrus had a bad interface - infact it was quite good. But then I had paid around $179 for the Nitrus - I thought I'd pay about $80 more and get an iPod. But for this price the Nitrus is truly worth it.

YEP, I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I GOT THIS RIO. IT WORKED GREAT, LOOKED COOLER THAN AN IPOD (SUCKERS), THE ONLY THING THAT PISSED ME OFF STRAIGHT AWAY WAS THAT I COULDN'T MAKE A PLAY LIST WHEN OUT & ABOUT....HOWEVER, I GOT OVER THAT.
THE REST, MY GOD. I EVEN CONVINCED MY MATE TO GET ONE. BIG MISTAKE. I FEEL ITS MY FAULT. MINE GOT FAULTY ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER HAVING IT, IT WOULDN'T CHARGE PROPERLY, THEN MIRACULOUSLY STARTED CHARGING AGAIN (?) ....HERS STARTED DOING THE SAME. NOW I CAN'T EVEN TRANSFER MUSIC TO IT, COMPUTERS DON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEVICE AND THE DIVICE SEEMS NOT TOO BOTHERED ABOUT A COMPUTER EITHER...SO... WHO KNOWS, MAYBE ITS A COINSIDENCE, AS I SAID, ITS GOOD IN THE SHORT TERM. |
