Editorial Reviews

The F4U Corsair was the first World War II aircraft to fly at 400 miles per hour, and racked up an incredible kill ratio of 11 to 1!! Called "Whistling Death" by the Japanese, the Corsair's 2,000 horse-power engine, six 50-caliber machine guns, and 4,000 pound bomb capacity made it a key weapon in the defeat of Imperial Japan. Other titles: "B-24's at War" series: The B-24 Story, Series II: Combat Mission, and Series III: The Road to Japan; Flying Tigers: Documentary.

If I had anything to do with this video, I would not want it known; this truly is a waste of plastic. A more accurate title might be "Some WWII Military Footage from the Pacific with Some Corsairs in it". If you are looking for a video with any sort of technical, or reference type material about the Corsair....forget it, it isn't here. If you're expecting some modern footage of restored Corsairs....forget it, it isn't here. If you'd like to see some close-up footage of this beautiful airplane....forget it, it isn't here. If, on the other hand, you'd like some military footage of life during WWII in the Pacific, such as how they did laundry and the eating conditions, this is the video for you. If you'd like to see 20 minutes of footage about kamikaze attacks on American ships in the Pacific (fully one third of the video's length), with nary a Corsair in it, then you'll have a smile on your face. If you'd like to listen to some of the worst inappropriate incidental music (jaunty tinkling on the piano accompanying exploding ammunition ships), then you'll consider your money well spent. If, on the other hand, you wanted to see a logically composed, informative film of the history of the design, deployment and performance of the F4U and its variants, then you'd better look elsewhere. There is no contemporary footage of the airplane anywhere and all the footage, apart from the interviews with people whose directions apparently were "try to think of something interesting to say about the Corsair", is the quality of the typical 40's newsreel film. I think that about says it all.
