Book Description

20th Century Women April 1994
Women in science have had special obstacles to overcome in the last century. For years, women were barred from enrolling at many major academic institutions. The eminent astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin had to make special arrangements in order to take classes at Harvard, which, like any number of institutions of the time, had a formal ban on female enrollment. Each of the 100 profiles in this book tells the inspiring story of a trailblazer who set a new standard of excellence in her field. These women, & their stories of ambition, intellect, adversity, & triumph, are guaranteed to inspire & delight.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book omits Marie Curie, one of the greatest!, May 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Remarkable Lives of 100 Women Healers and Scientists (20th Century Women) (Hardcover)
Although an O.K. book to give to young girls about some successful women, the title leads the buyer to believe it is a worldwide overview. The women mentioned are from the U.S., thus Marie Curie, winner of 2 Nobel Prizes (one in Chemistry, one in Physics), is not mentioned. Mary Leakey is not mentioned as a leading anthropologist. No American meteorologist is mentioned, although several are quite famous, including Joanne Simpson.
