He retired from his two highly successful businesses, established a charitable medical foundation, and spent the last 30 years of his life and $80 million obtaining information about the many uses of phenytoin. He found that it had been reported useful in the medical literature for over 70 symptoms and disorders. This information, in 20 different languages, has been translated and condensed into three bibliographies and sent to all the physicians in the United States. In spite of this, phenytoin is still being overlooked because of a flaw in the US system of bringing medicines to the public. Dreyfus's attempts to correct this tragic misunderstanding have led to the highest levels of government - but he has found government too busy with problems to have time for solutions.

I came across this book by chance,and it is the most amazing medical book I have read in a very long time. Jack Dreyfus met with two presidents, a vice president, the heads of the FDA and others to try and be a help to humanity. This man started a foundation which has spent over 80 million dollars trying to get the benefits of this drug out to the public. At the age of 45 he became severely depressed and was seeing a psychoneurologist 6 time a week, and eventually had himself voluntarily commited. He asked his doctor to use this drug and was litirally helped within the hour. The book reads like a novel after that as he struggles to let the world know about the other uses of this drug.This man is a humanitarian of the highest order, and this book will definitly change the lives of many people who have a wide variety of illnesses.

A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked (Dilantin) by Jack Dreyfus is one of those very, very rare books where the author claims an FDA approved medicine, in this case Dilantin, improved the ability to think more clearly. There are other books about Dilantin, like Nerves In Collision by Walter C. Alvarez, M.D., but Jack Dreyfus's account is quite exceptional. The only other book I know which compares to it is How to Cure Hyperactivity (ADHD)(1981) by Anita Uhl Brothers, M.D., of Berkeley, California and C. Thomas Wild which is about an FDA approved caffeine compound which can reduce distractibility and increase attention span a little for a small subpopulation of those with mild Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

this is one of the most informative and well written books - I found it after seeing the remarkablemedicine website - it tells of Dreyfus' realization of the amazing versatile uses of dilantin - a medicine that is effective for a whole host of conditions and not just epilepsy. The book is must reading for all doctors and everyone interested in biography - Jack Dreyfus - he has unbelievable talents - and his discovery of the uses of dilantin is so important the whole world should know it. Read the book and check out the website - this story is important for everyone to know.
