The book offers a nice introduction to the artist's life and times. Also provides excellent insights regarding the workshop and distinguishing between Rembrandt's art and that of his pupils. The scholarship is indepth and apt, most of the writers being part of the Rembrandt Project. There are 83 separate plates (most in color) with wonderful essays and explanations.

Although possibly a bit out of date in 2011, this is still an excellent set. Fine selection of paintings, drawings, and graphic works with varied analysis and good introductry essays.
Keeping it from 5 star in my opinion are numerous inaccuracies and irritating typos that could and should have been picked up by editing prior to publication.

From an exhibition focussed on factors relevant to knowing what is true in the life and work of the Master and that which has falsely been attributed to him, this first of two volumes is a fascinating examination of what distinguishes his paintings from those of other Masters and, in particular, from some of his most noted students. Team-written, there are interesting segments on what we know about the real Real Rembrandt and relevant aspects of the society in which he lived, but the core of it are discussions and analysis of the works themselves as well as how modern scientific techniques are used to enlarge our appreciation of them and to free them from some of the manipulations they endured during the centuries since they were first painted. Much is mildly technical but even a layman (which I certainly am) can appreciate the skill and knowledge that goes into attributions and the techniques which an artist had to master to provide an acceptable Rembrandt. While I knew while I was reading the sections on brushstrokes and colorings that I would not be able to apply them to pictures myself, I was excited to be led to an understanding of the decisions an artist of Rembrandt's type had to make and the skills which were required to carry out his design.
As others have pointed out, the illustrations are most appealing as well as apt subjects for examination.
I am happy that used copies are available at relatively modest prices but the soaring prices indicate that you had better get hold of a copy before they enter the realm of the "rare book dealer".

This box set is the most prized possession on my bookshelf. I could not possibly do the pictures and information in this book justice with words. Some of the most amazing detail photographs of Rembrandt's surfaces that I have ever seen.
