"Remediating Reading Difficulties" provides practical, easy-to-implement activities and strategies designed to correct diagnosed reading difficulties. Most chapters describe a specific reading problem or skill, explain possible causes of the problem, and provide an extensive and wide-ranging variety of ideas and instructional strategies to remediate and prevent the reading problem. "Remediating Reading Difficulties" is also an excellent handbook of ideas for teachers in the regular classroom who wish to teach and reinforce specific reading skills and for teachers working with students who speak other languages (ESOL/LEP students). Brief, clear, student-friendly, and comprehensive, "Remediating Reading Difficulties" is a simple, easy-to-use quick-reference tool that both pre- and in-service teachers will want to keep ready at arm's length to motivate, communicate with, assess, and promote good reading practices in all readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars remediating reading difficulties-, April 5, 2000
By
Crawley and Merritt have produced a book that can be used by both classroom teachers and parents who wish to improve the reading skills of poor readers. The book covers topics from helping children attack words using simple phonic skills to adjusting reading rates for older readers. Each topic includes a description of the reading skill and then a myriad of activities, games and techniques that can be used to improve reading in that skill area. Illustrations make the activities easy to read and create for children. A must for anyone working with readers who need help.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for anyone working with children, October 2, 2000
By A Customer
What is so wonderful about this book is that it contains explicit directions for reading activities that support the learning theories presented. It's not some esoteric treatise on reading problems, nor is it difficult to implement the activities described in this book. It also is progressive, so that more basic reading problems as well as higher-level problems are addressed equally. Furthermore, Crawley has also included some great hints on how learning can be supported in the home. On the whole, it is one of the most practical resources a reading teacher can have in his or her library.

If you are an educator or a parent who just wants to give your child a headstart in reading, this book is very good for that. It gives instructors a good variety of techniques and activities to teach in a classroom.
