Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–This volume is one of the finest of its genre for this age group to appear in some years. In the foreword, David Eisenhower introduces his grandfather, Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces, as a real person, and not just a historical figure. In the first chapter, Drez describes the progress of the war in Europe. Four more chronologically arranged chapters cover the problems, tactics, strategies, deceptions, and the actual day of the invasion. An epilogue sums up its role in the end of the war. The book's format is dignified yet eye-catching. The text is printed on backgrounds in subdued pastel shades, leaving white margins on each page. Most of the vintage black-and-white photos are commonly seen in other titles. A few of them are in color. The captions are informative. Personal anecdotes from and portraits of soldiers on both sides are included as part of the narration. While most of the book focuses on the planning and execution of the invasion, the tremendous loss of lives is not overlooked. Although no new ground is covered here, this well-organized, clearly written account provides a solid overview for readers unfamiliar with the subject. A first-rate purchase.–Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS

From Booklist

Gr. 4-8. This large-format book focuses on a turning point in World War II: the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Drez sets the stage with a brief discussion of the war in Europe prior to 1944. He then turns to the strategy, intelligence, and deceptions that led up to D-Day, the events that occurred during the invasion of Normandy, and what enabled the Allies to succeed. Well-chosen stories and comments from soldiers who participated in the invasion add a sense of immediacy to the historical account. Enhanced by the book's attractive layout, the many fine illustrations include black-and-white photos of individuals and battle scenes and color shots of leaders, sites, and artifacts. An excellent map shows the topography of the Normandy coast, as well as the locations of towns and beaches and the landing places of divisions from Britain, Canada, and the U.S. The book ends with a short bibliography, brief source notes, and an informative time line of the war. A useful and highly readable account. Carolyn Phelan

I never realized that when my family was leaving LeHarve, France in June of 1966, we steamed right in front of the entire Normandy beachhead and didn't know it, which is funny because my dad's brother Ben was a ranger who stormed the beach at Pont du Hoc. I recently inherited the 1928A1 Thompson he carried then, in FINE condition, and will always treasure it, especially now. This book has many great pictures, especially the two-page spread showing the entire beachhead. Another GREAT Amazon find for me!!

Just returned from Normandy Cemetery and Omaha Beach. We watched Band of Brothers before doing this Adventure by Disney tour to Northern France. Disney had sent this book, and it was incredible. The residue of the harbors the allies built is still there. This is a great book and a must read for all the world. The thought of where we would be now is very frightening if not for these courageous men.
