Book Description

Remember Guam
A collection of memories and recipes to warm your heart and lighten your spirit! Read through the pages, close your eyes, travel back in time to lives well lived on a tiny, Pacific island, the island of Guam.

Half of this book is dedicated to the collection of memories and stories Paula has received from people all over the world. These stories have been divided into decades: 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, etc. There are stories from veterans who served during WWII, from folks who were stationed on Guam recently, from those who found work there for a few years, from those young ladies who were whisked away, married and have been unable to return home, from those still living on Guam and more.

The other half of Remember Guam is a collection of 20 recipes that are not included in A Taste of Guam.

Remember Guam also includes the Chamorro alphabet, a pronunciation guide to "hard to pronounce" villages / places on Guam, a sheet on how to set a Chamorro fiesta table, and a few more interesting facts you need to know about Guam and Guam food.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Hafa Adai! Yes, that's hello in Chamorro, the native language of Guam.
I loved working on Remember Guam. I was able to interview and collect over 70 stories from people across the oceans and across the generations. It was while working on Remember Guam that I realized I should make videos for all my recipes.
Join my friends and family on a great adventure through the delicious, intensely flavored foods Guam has to offer.

About the Author

Paula Lujan Quinene writes mostly about her long-time loves--Guam, exercise, and desserts. Born and raised on the 32-mile-long rock, this proud islander now lives in North Carolina where she continues to work on her love of Guam food. Schooled as an exercise scientist at the University of Oregon, Paula has been able to help friends, family, and fans with their cooking and exercise endeavors.
Remember Guam is one of Paula's tributes to her island. During her years as a college student at the U of O, and as an Army wife, Paula met many folks with wonderful memories of their time on Guam. Writing Remember Guam was Paula's way of capturing such memories, and sharing more of her Guam recipes.
Each Guam recipe in Remember Guam has a corresponding video on Paula's website. The author is ever grateful to her husband, Ed, for taking the time to edit and upload the videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember Guam Cookbook January 11, 2010
I love this book. Being from Guam, every recipe I tried is superb.
Tastes just like home. I would recommend this book to all who love
"Guamanian/Chamorro" food or those who like to try different foods.

5.0 out of 5 stars going to Guam September 4, 2011
Remember Guam
Paula Ann Lujan Quinene
ISBN: 0-7414-5503-x

Remember Guam is the most heart felt collection of memories and recipes, I have ever read before. We need more books that are this delightful, and heart warming. This is the only book I have opened and felt as if I had been right there along with the other occupants of Guam, and felt right at home. Guam is a special community as everyone has special memories and the completeness of the memoires ties everything together, along with the recipes that are the added bonus.
Paula gives everyone the inside passport to visit Guam with this book, without leaving your livingroom. Paula shows the love she has for her home and it would make a wonderful gift to any and all who wants to learn more about other cultures. I highly recommend this book to everyone looking to find something new or old which ever you perfer to look at it. Keep writing Paula it is wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! June 22, 2011
By Adela
A delightful fusion of a tasty cookbook and cultural memories and milestones throughout the decades on a beautiful Pacific island whose treasures are lost on most. Remember Guam fills that void perfectly for readers, making you feel like you are a part of this special community, and the uniqueness of this book including recipes tied to the anecdotes along the way is unmatched. Paula Ann Lujan Quinene provides the reader with a ticket to an incredible journey from the moment that you open the cover. After trying out most of the recipes and following along to the instructional videos online, you cannot walk away from this book not understanding the author's love of home and passion to share it. Would make a great gift for anyone interested in learning about other cultures, reminiscing on their experiences in Guam, or for your favorite chef looking to expand their culinary palate! Highly recommended and very well done, Remember Guam left me wanting to plan a holiday to experience everything the island had to offer first hand!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow June 26, 2013
By Kevin
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Paula has done a terrific job of putting this book together in an easy to follow format. The end result of each of the recipes I have done has been just like I remember from growing up on Guam. The video support on her website is invaluable for making even a relative novice such as myself able to recreate authentic Chamorro dishes. The photos and memories that are included are at the same time entertaining and informative. Thank you so much for doing this cookbook!

This book brings back memories. If you have ever visited this tiny little island each page is filled with memories and you can relate to. If you have never been to Guam, it is a wonderful introduction to the culture and island.

I am not from Guam nor know much about this country. I just started and amazed how much content and pride is packed into the book. Guam is only a four hour flight from Tokyo definitely on the agenda. Definitely a must read!
