Editorial Reviews

Deluxe two disc set draws together all of the Shangri-Las' Red Bird recordings including in-concert material, stereo and alternate versions, radio spots plus Shadow Morton's deadpan demo of 'Dressed In Black'. With in-depth liners by acclaimed Shangs' authority and Goldmine writer Dennis Garvey, this memorabilia-laden set offers all the hits and collector's gems in one must-have package. The Shangri-Las' tough girl demeanor was the perfect counterpoint to their bittersweet songs of loss, longing and teenage angst. Formed in 1963 in Queens, New York the group comprised two sets of sisters; Mary and Betty Weiss and twins Marguerite (Marge) and Mary Ann Ganser.

I considered giving this collection five stars. The only thing that stopped me from awarding five stars instead of four is that, as a hardcore Shangri-Las collector, there aren't any tracks that I hadn't heard before.

For those who have only heard the Shangri-Las' top hits, or for those who only have CDs that offer twelve tracks or so, this CD offers every Shangs record that was released by Red Bird records. The only recordings not present in this collection are songs recorded by the Shangs for other labels (four Mercury sides, two Smash sides, and two Spokane/Scepter sides, all of which are currently available on other CDs).

Many of the top hits are presented in stereo for this REMEMBER set. The overall sound is excellent, probably the best these recordings have sounded on CD. In particular, the "live" songs from the group's first album have never sounded better to me. I even heard a couple of background musical instruments that I was never aware of before. The "live" audience still sounds terrible, but the vocals and instruments are clearer than previous renditions.

The liner notes are also a treat. Most contemporary girl-group CD sets feature liner notes by the excellent Mick Patrick of England. REMEMBER, however, features notes written by "Bronx Boy" Dennis Garvey. Garvey attended many of the Shangs' live shows back in the day and offers an eyewitness account of those, including mentioning the personnel changes that occured during different performances by the group.

If you love the music of the Shangri-Las, this set provides a complete assemblage of their Red Bird label output (even a rare demo record performed by manager George "Shadow" Morton is here).

I see nothing in this collection that would entice the die-hard fan to buy this, except maybe to check out the sound. Myrmidons of Melodrama is still the hands-down choice. Except for the long version of Walkin', (which they dangle like a treat) all these have been available before. The live tracks are from their original debut Leader of the Pack, of which Maybe is not really live but the studio version with crowd noise dubbed in. A better choice should have been the audio portions of the numerous TV appearances that exist, particularly the Shindig performance of Out in the Streets which eclipses the released version. The stereo tracks are (or were available) on the great Girl Group Sound and Girls Girls Girls both on the Varese Sarabande label. The mono versions are better anyway, but the stereo is sure worth hearing if you don't have them. It is a shame by the way that Girl Group Sound is out of print. It is one of the best ever and has the added treat of stereo Shangs. But the real shocker is that a CD that claims to be `rarities' does not have Sweet Sounds of Summer and Foot Steps on the Roof. Both later '67 singles are great stuff. - What I am waiting for is a memoir from Mary Weiss. C'mo' now. The potential is sooo obvious. We really need to know if they took someone hostage, stole that car, if they really were a tough crowd, what really happened to the twins, and Mary's days as a California hippy. Who did they meet and what were her impressions of them? I mean, it does not take much to imagine the jokes and humor, and on and on...P.S. if you want to check out some rare Shangs, check out youtube, song they did live called Simon Says, and other called Love you More Than Yesterday, which is studio, where is this?

Ah, the Shangri-Las! The girl group of them all. Mary, the lead singer, was 15, her sister Betty (Liz) 17, and the twins Marge and Mary Ann 16 when they signed to the Red Bird label. Their first two very successful singles, Remember (Walkin' In The Sand), and Leader of the Pack, shot them to the top of the charts. "Leader..." displaced the Supremes at number 1 in 1964 and remember, The Beatles were beginning to be all the rage. Quite a fine start to a career in music. Unfortunately, this was not to continue.
This double CD set has a large number of the singles and some LP cuts, also. It also has a hardback cover with a booklet written by a fan of the Shangri-Las.
I enjoy this CD set very much and the remastering done on the songs make them very clear. The one thing I didn't like was the missing tracks, "Footsteps On The Roof" and "Sweet Sounds of Summer". These were the last two singles which were released on the Mercury label. Neither of these fine singles were pushed by Mercury and were therefore not heard much outside the New York City area. The actual singles are very difficult to find.

This double set gives you exactly what you're looking for, in terms of music selection. The Shangri-Las were an amazing vocal group and there's a lot of stuff on here I've never heard before, nearly all of which ended up being great selections. The one big disappointing with this set is the horrible mastering job. All songs are EXTREMELY squashed, in terms of dynamic range, or "compressed" as we call it in the industry. Most people probably won't notice, but audiophiles may end up tearing their hair out.
