5.0 out of 5 stars A must have CD., April 15, 2005

This is what music is suppose to sound like. When I put this cd on I don't have to worry about skipping over songs, because every track is a must listen to track. The writing and arrangements are first rate, and are not piano heavy, which really highlights Onaje's art of songwriting. This is a classic. BRAVO !!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very engaging, if a little on the lightweight side, June 11, 2005
This review is from: Remember Their Innocence (Audio CD)
It's altogether good to have Onaje Allan Gumbs back in a jazz mode. And if Remember Their Innocence gives too much away to smooth jazz (I'm especially put off by Roger Byam's soprano sax playing; he does much better on tenor sax), it nevertheless showcases the leader in a pretty congenial mainstream jazz setting.

And make no mistake--Gumbs is a jazz pianist to be reckoned with; that he hasn't, perhaps, found his ideal mode takes nothing away from his altogether attractive concept, compositional acumen, and pianistic prowess. The trouble here--hence, the subtraction of one star--is that he too often flirts with smooth jazz sensibilities, especially with the throwaway vocals. It helps greatly that he has the entirely amazing Billy Kilson on board for several cuts in the drum chair; the numbers he plays on display a grit and character that, had he been present on all selections, might have enabled the project to achieve that coveted fifth star.

As it is, this is an entirely worthwhile session to acquire. And even if it isn't absolutely essential jazz, it still displays a very attractive pianistic conception and performance by the leader.

Bottom line, I'm a fan, hoping that Gumbs eventually finds the ultimate jazz setting for his estimable chops and compositions.

****1/2.
