"What are the best resources for learning asceticism outside of the monastery?"
This book was number one on his list -- with good reason!
Most of the other books were written centuries ago. This book is written for the modern day ascetic aspirant and takes the realities of the modern world into consideration.
Whereas the ascetics and Spiritual Fathers of days gone by could perform miracles and even raise the dead, Elder Sophrony states that merely KEEPING THE FAITH in the modern world is as great a deed as raising the dead was in the past.
I sometimes reach out and just open it up to any page, and read and read and read. Even if I just read a couple of pages, I get so much out of it. I would recommend this highly - especially to those who are serious about their faith and their journey to salvation. Very very good.
