Editorial Reviews

The Orwells. Still in high school, the Chicago band has been bashing out rock n roll together since middle school. They know their s**t. Steeped in the Stooges, Replacements and Ramones, the band came of age in the late '00s just as the Black Lips, King Khan, Harlem and Ty Segall began garnering national attention. The collective effect was nothing short of a sort of clarion call - one that rang out, piercing suburban high school hallways and hangouts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully Rebellious August 27, 2012
By Will
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best CDs I have listened to in awhile and is one of the first I have actually felt compelled to purchase in quite some time. Each of the songs is rebellious, catchy, and most of all, meaningful. Since this is The Orwells' debut album, I can only imagine how far they are going to take their music from here.

Some of my favorite songs include "All the Cool Kids" with lyrics like "you'd rather stay high than say hi" and "Never Ever" with ones such as "we've got this fear of aging, we're living in a daydream" make this album very relatable for a young man like me, much like The Orwells are themselves. While those are a couple of the great songs and lyrics on this album, every song is different and rich with its own unique meaning (my other favorites include "Lays At Rest," "Halloween All Year," "Painted Faces and Long Hair," and "Ancient Egypt").

If you are looking for an album to complement your angst-ridden high school life, or just want one to help you bring back those dreadful but idealistic days, this is the CD for you, as each of its songs captures perfectly what it means to young, lost, and alienated in an unfair world you can never fully escape.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Cool November 29, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
The Orwells are about the fifth band to release this same album this year, called Remember When this time, and in listening to it you really get why. It's low-budget garage rock like you've always wanted: distorted guitars, messy hooks, clipping vocals, and a world of fun. Even the drums can't contain themselves. Sure, it's nothing special and it's nothing new, but rock'n'roll man. You just don't get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same as it ever was.... September 10, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I'm not sure where to start with The Orwells. From what I can tell they're young. Like maybe still in high school young. A bunch of young punks from suburban Chicago that started jamming in the basement of Mr. Orwell's house. Isn't that how they always start out? The basement or the garage, take your pick. They rock that sort of barely hanging on by a thread kind of sound. Garage rock with a capital `G'. If you drink enough cheap beer, smoke enough lousy cigarettes and listen to enough Blue Cheer, MC5, The Strokes and Black Lips, chances are you'll end up sounding just like The Orwells. Is that good or bad? Well, that depends.

The Orwells have made a name for themselves with this song called `Mallrats'(La La La) and for good reason: it's pretty catchy. Maybe ten understandable words and someone talking over what sounds like a phone line and a chorus consisting of "La La La", you really can't go wrong. The star here is the fuzzed out guitars and cymbal crashing drums. It has a White Blood Cells vibe to it, with a wink and a nod to `Fell In Love With A Girl'. Fun stuff. There are quite a few odes sprinkled throughout this garage and punk-inflected album. `All The Cool Kids' starts out with a snippet of Janet Leigh being eviscerated by Anthony Perkins in Psycho, then they jump into this Blue Cheer psych-out jam. `Painted Faces and Long Hair' could be a Black Lips b-side. 13th Floor Elevators are represented here on the song `Hallway Homicide'. `In My Bed' is where Julian Casablancas's career ended up, in case he was still looking for it. They mine the classic garage and punk nuggets, sprinkle throughout and let the dice fall where they may. There's some Memphis twang strewn on a few tracks as well. The Orwells definitely did their homework.

If you're looking for new ground to be broken or something wholly original, then check out Animal Collective or Swans. If you want something that'll get you through the next 40 minutes till quitting time or something to keep your ears company for that drive to the city, then give The Orwells a try.
