5.0 out of 5 stars B00005K31E November 21, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I've seen this band live a few times, and that's the only way to see the band at its best. While most new bands are better after much overproduction, a live audience brings out an extra zing from this powerhouse of a group.

I've seen over 200 concerts in my life, and I have NEVER seen an audience fall in love with an opening band as quickly or as passionately as the Indigo Girls' audience fell for Girlyman. After the first song, the audience exploded into wild clapping and whistling. It was unreal. So there's my plug for seeing them live if you're ever so fortunate.

But for those who don't live close enough to see them live, don't pass up the next best thing. If you love music--real music played by real, talented musicians with a love for making music--you won't go wrong with buying this CD. I guarantee that if you appreciate lush harmonies, well crafted lyrics, and songs with both emotional depth and humor, you will love this CD.

If you do run across a song that's not quite your thing, you can't deny that it's well executed. And you should just stick around for the next song, which is likely to draw from a very different musical genre. These three musicians are so strong that they can make amazing songs in any style. Some songs are definitely folk, some a little twangy, and some have more of a pop feel (the type of pop we can only wish were on the radio). But all of them are amazing.

The first two songs are a powerhouse opening, much better than the beginning tracks on the CDs of most well established stars. "Viola" is just gorgeous, and "Hey Rose" is addictive. You could easily listen to just those two tracks and get your money's worth.

"Fall Stories" is whimsical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony October 13, 2004
By Theresa
Format:Audio CD
I heard Girlyman for the first time yesterday opening for the Indigo Girls. I was in awe ... one of their songs nearly brought me to tears, another had me laughing ... their harmony is nothing less than natural and their lyrics display raw and tangible emotion. On top of all of this, their stage presence seemed professional. They joked with us, joked with each other, and told us stories as if the stage were their home. They definately held their own and I am looking forward to watching them evolve. I consider it a gift that the Indigo Girls unveiled for us last night. It isn't every day that I fall in love with a new band.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my new favorites February 22, 2005
Format:Audio CD
It's always a thrill to be pleasantly surprised by an opening act you've never heard of. I first heard Girlyman when they opened for the Indigo Girls last fall, and was absolutely floored. "Say Goodbye," "Viola" and "The Shape I Found You In" are favorites, and their cover of "My Sweet Lord" is fun, although a little safe.

They were a fun band to see live. Girlyman possesses excellent stage presence and good-natured wit. I look forward to more great things from them.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing harmony November 16, 2004
By Jack
Format:Audio CD
the chemistry between these three performers is obvious. their voices blend like they grew up singing together, and their lyrics are fabulously singable. girlyman is a blast in concert because of the power of their songs live and the background stories they tell about the songs. you wont regret purchasing this album!

4.0 out of 5 stars This band ROCKS!!!!! October 12, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I just saw them open for the Indigo Girls about 4 hours ago and was blown away. Great harmonies, great lyrics, and all three of them showed terrific stage presence! (And a good sense of humor)Anyone who appreciates good music will not regret buying this album. Amy Ray signed a winner to her label with Girlyman- hope to see more of them in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Stipe meets the Indigo Girls February 19, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I first heard this group on the radioio eclectic webstream. The song was "Fall Stories." I noticed over the course of a month or so that every time that the song came on that I paid more attention to it. They have marvelous melodies that you just wished you could hear more of in mainstream music. I found their website and listened to their album. After one listen I ordered the CD and awaited its arrival. I thought they reminded me very much of the early Indigo Girls. Later on I joined their fan club in the hope they might eventually visit somewhere nearby. They are now signed on to the Indigo Girls record label so I hope there is enough marketing power behind them that they get to make a new album. The only weak song on the album is the remake of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." It isn't bad, but just not as great as all the other songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible beautiful wonderful May 27, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This has been my favorite CD for the last 7 months straight. Every song is a winner - a CD you can play from beginning to end. The harmonies go straight past all conscious thought to fill an empty space inside your soul. When the music ends the echo remains there, demanding a repeat listen.
Over time my favorite song has shifted on this CD. I was pulled in by the bold Amaze Me and joyful Postcards from Mexico. Then the wistful Montpelier. Now I find Say Goodbye and Even If to be my most frequent picks... each evoking a subtle emotion balanced between happy and sad, which, if you put the song on repeat, is sustained across endless time.
Buy it, try it, love it, share it.
